A composer I greatly admire is Carter Burwell. He is one of the most consistent in developing thematic material that perfectly suits the subject matter of the films he scores. He has a poetic soul, as evidenced in this cue from Gods and Monsters:
There is no other composer out there working in films with a voice like his, to my knowledge.

Burwell is one of my favorite composers. He indeed has a unique and easily recognisable voice. I love the melancholy feel of most of his music.
Gods and Monsters is indeed a wonderful score. Bill Condon always seems to bring out the best in Burwell.
Carter Burwell. I first started loving his “voice” when I heard the score to Blood Simple, watching it on cable several times in the mid 80’s. I soon bought the short LP to Psycho III and then on and on would seek out his scores. Along came And the Band Played On in the early 90’s, perhaps my first CD of his. His melancholy tones and textures spoke to my soul. Storyville is exquisite “alone at night music.” I thank the Coen brothers for “discovering” his talents and giving him the life-changing opportunity to be a film composer way back when. Carter Burwell’s music has certainly changed my life for the better, in terms of what film music can mean for listeners like us.
Blood Simple is such a great little score. There was a period when after I got that Varese disc which has both it and Raising Arizona I was obsessed with listening to Blood Simple for months on end. It just gets under my skin and stimulates my mind.
