I know this has come up from time to time, but I just rewatched the first episode of HBO's mini-series FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON and was struck again by the brilliance of Michael Kamen's score. It is a huge disappointment that only the main and end titles were ever released. PLEASE -- La-La Land, Intrada, Varese, someone, anyone -- release this score!

I have not heard this score, but Michael Kane is a pretty good bet!

having Kamen score all of TWO HBO miniseries was unfair, so...
"Can We Do This?" - Michael Kamen.
"Apollo One" - Mark Mancina.
"We Have Cleared the Tower" - Mark Isham.
"1968" -Michael Kamen.
"Spider" - Mason Daring.
"Mare Tranquilitatis" - James Newton Howard
"That's All There Is" - Mason Daring
"We Interrupt This Program" - Brad Fiedel
"For Miles and Miles" - Jeff Beal and Mark Isham
"Galileo Was Right" - Mason Daring
"The Original Wives Club" - Marc Shaiman
"Le voyage dans la lune" - Michael Kamen

Is it rude to say I preferred this miniseries to Band Of Brothers?

There have been many threads about this over the years. We're all hoping and wishing someone releases the scores, but it's probably a rights/logistics nightmare.

I'm well aware of all the previous threads, and have probably posted in every one of them. As I said, I rewatched episode 1 today and was inspired to start a new one, if only to remind the producers that there is interest.

Yeah, I salute your effort. I've basically given up hope on this particular project, but would be tremendously pleased if it materialized.

Has anyone from one of the labels ever indicated what the problem is with getting this released?

I would instantly buy a release from this series.

Same problem we had with Volunteers. HBO not interested in licensing catalog stuff.

A shame for both of these projects. Sometimes, I think it's a miracle that any of these studios bother with us at all. But then when they don't, I'm outraged!

(I thought "From the Earth…" was actually an Imagine production, despite airing on HBO, whereas Volunteers was an HBO Pictures production despite premiering in theaters… but I have no doubt that absolutely none of this is news to you, Roger.)

I suppose licensing soundtrack releases is small change to a behomoth like HBO, and not worth the effort. While you'd think it's surely easy money for them, evidently all the legal clearance nonsense makes it too prohibitive.

Yes, I imagine these things only get done because someone at the studios are behind the effort, understand the importants of film score preservation and restoration or film score fans themselves.

Would it be worth pestering Ron Howard and/or Tom Hanks to tell them the score fan community would love to have these scores released? Can't imagine it would do much good, but you never know...

I absolutely would buy every volume of this - like with Buck Rogers and Amazing Stories. Great composers, great episode scores, including Kamen, of course.

I'll just give this thread a bump, just because I've rewatched the first two episodes today (going to rewatch the series this week) and my lord it is SUCH magnificent music in this show; soaring, sad, exciting, poignant, just wonderful. Cannot believe this has never been released. A genuine soundtrack tragedy.

This, folks, is my final, mightiest soundtrack Grail.

I’m right there with you in wanting this!

That said, even apart from its parent company being the now-minimally-cooperative Warner Bros., I don’t think HBO has ever cooperated with the specialty labels on older catalogue releases (it’s even been a while since they let Varese do the first two seasons of Game of Thrones, and that was a current show).

Don’t they own Volunteers, which is why Roger hasn’t been able to put it out on Intrada? I think there’s a chance they also control Mom and Dad Save the World, potentially preventing an expansion of that (depends on Varese’s agreement I suppose)…

Yavar
