Nicholas Britell to Score Disney+’s ‘Rogue One’ Prequel Series ‘Andor’
Nicholas Britell (Succession, Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, Don’t Look Up, Cruella, Vice, The Big Short, The Underground Railroad) has been tapped to score the upcoming Disney+ original series Andor. The show is developed by Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) and stars Diego Luna who will reprise his role of Cassian Andor from 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, as well as Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough, Fiona Shaw and Kyle Soller. The Lucasfilm production takes place five years before the events of Rogue One. No plot details have been announced yet. Gilroy also serves as the project’s showrunner and additional writers include Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), Beau Willimon (House of Cards) and Stephen Schiff (The Americans). Andor is set to premiere this year on Disney+.
Britell also has Benjamin Millepied’s feature Carmen (to premiere this year) and the HBO limited series Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dinasty (to premiere on March 10) coming up and will also return to score the fourth season of HBO’s Succession.
Britell first caught my attention 5 years ago with the opening cue of "Battle of the Sexes," and for my money he's the most talented, versatile, and interesting of the new bunch. Really sharp at matching the images onscreen with just the right music. (The only exception for me: "Cruella.") And I love his orchestrations. Seems like a really nice guy, too.
I think he'll do a fine job in the Star Wars universe. A deserved step up for him.
I skipped around that video thinking it was a trailer and saw Andor in a tux and thought "this is stupid they're putting Andor in a modern-day tuxedo!"
Then I realized it was just a promo video with Diego Luna talking about the character.
Anyway, I'm fine with Britell being added to the project. Hopefully bring some orchestral flair back to the music of the Star Wars universe.
In regards to Britell, I said this in my review of SUCCESSION:
"In all honesty, I’ve not been a particularly big fan of Britell’s work so far, nor the überpraised Barry Jenkins movies for which he’s written the music. Which is why Succession took me by such surprise; displaying a side of him that I wasn’t aware of – a more classical, developped style that plays around with a wide array of orchestrational details."
So if it hadn't been for SUCCESSION, I would not have been particularly enthused by this announcement. But now, I kinda am. I'm at least curious to hear what he can do within the STAR WARS universe. (Plus, I thank all that is Holy that neither Giacchino nor Göransson are anywhere near this).

We'll finally get the string quartet for STAR WARS we always wanted.
I must admit I had limited interest for a series about one of the many flat characters of "Rogue One", but it could be interesting with more time on their hands. In any case, great choice of Nicholas Britell, an interesting score to look forward to.
I thought Rogue One was one of the better Star Wars films in recent years, precisely because it does not include any of our regular characters we have known so well. That film plays quite nicely at home on bluray with some sound cranked up.
Oh boy, how I've come to loathe contemporary, one size fits all, GarageBand trailer music for genre fare such as this. Turns me right off of the content they're trying to sell because it so spectacularly illuminates how vapid it really is.
