At the risk of sounding like a dictator always on the lookout for trouble, I notice that "emiliano" has registered today and has posted a link to Soundcloud asking to "please help identify this music", in a style which recalls the infamous "karlina" and his/her two previous incarnations.

"emiliano" may indeed be a genuine new member, but I doubt it, and being the fascist I (apparently) am, have reported him/her/it.

Should we just ignore those possible spammers? Report them? If we answer their requests and they get banned, our remarks stay forever while the spammers' comments get erased - even karlina's most hilarious ones.

I remember one of the mods previously saying it's easier to 'Wipe Them Out' if none of the legit forum members have added a post.
But yeah, it's getting harder to 'out' the bots from the humes.
Usually, if the profile has been created 'today' and has no personal profile deets other than the name of a composer (usually Zimmer), it's most likely to be a bot.
But they've started answering back now too, so it can get confusing.

Yeah kev, and sometimes it can get quite tempting to have ping-pong sparring with people like "karlina", who might actually just have been the next door neighbour having a laugh at us.

Anyway, I'm ignoring "emiliano". Fave composer is "ennio morricone". Those non-caps are a giveaway and "it" only registered today after karlina was banned. If nobody responds to emiliano (which I think is a good idea for now) and "he" comes back soon with a "Why no friends answer my question, I pay you money", then it's surefire extermination, with no debris.

There are those spammers (and bots) that are easily identified, as they just register and then post links to unrelated stuff they are spamming.

I don't reply to such threads and just report them, as that is apparently easiest for the FSM moderation.

Case of emiliano, yes, it seems to be the same pattern. It's always telling if somebody just registers, opens a new thread that and the first post contains a link to somewhere else. Doesn't mean it's a spammer, but it's at least the first impression. Also telling that if once it's answered, there is just the next link "and what is this"? Perhaps they are just trying to boost their soundcloud clicks, who knows.

It's not big deal to me... as long as it is contained in one post. I just find it odd that people think that it's somehow worth their time. If it's not interesting to me, I just ignore it, if it's spam for sure, I report it. (The only posts I ever report here are clear spam&scam posts, other than that, I don't bother the mods.)

Or it could just be somebody for whom English isn't a first or second language, maybe quite young, who's heard a bit of music tracked into a relatively obscure movie (at least to general Western audiences) and wants to know what it is, but isn't up on netiquette and online behaviour. Can't get too judgemental about it: I for one was probably not that different many decades ago.

I listened to the sound clip a couple of times, I didn't recognise it or the style, and I left it at that. No-one's been asked for money, no-one's been linked to dubious websites except a YouTube link that's exactly what it's claimed to be.

Could be a tactic that tries to provoke someone to reply to his thread.

Goes to the theory that internet trolls have some inner void they need to fill, so if at least some people in the Net react to them, they feel some form of gratification. Like throwing ripples in a pond. Of course, people on the Net always react to whatever you throw in there, so you might as well striving for something constructive, but I guess some people are just bored at home yet cannot come up with anything better.

Except that it is improbable that young folks new to the Internet who are not up to Netiquette and behavior end up here on an old film music discussion board. They'd go trolling on Reddit or Facebook or the like.

Hahaha. The only thing I have in common with spam is the colour of my legs, on a good day!

I don’t know. I had a bit of fun piss farting around with karlina. And seeing other people’s replies. No-one took it seriously and i don’t think anyone was anything but moderately amused by karlina’s replies. I remember years ago when spammers were met with outrage (which is what they wanted). This seemed more to be a source of......meh, you want to try this? no-one is taking you seriously.

Actually, spammers want you to click on their links (and then do or get whatever they have ready for you), it's trolls that want you to get outraged. Spammers do it for the money, trolls for the heck of it. There are possibly some hybrid forms, though you do not encounter them often in the wild.
