Today on my blog, in response to the latest barrage of spam on the FSM board...

https://www.lukaskendall.com/post/i-hate-spam

The nugget here, which I'm quoting because it's relevant to the latest karlina/emiliano spate of attention-seeking shite is - "When you see spam, just report it and let us delete the offending posts and accounts."

So basically we do what we do to this Andoran bootleg spammer what we do to all Andoran bootlegs.

Ban on sight.

There is no one here. They all have packed up and went to Fred’s Discount.

It is probably the people who own FSM to generate revenue from advertisements, more post, more money. Got it now.

Yeah, it's all about the enormous amounts of wealth and splendor that Lukas generates from us bickering here on this site, riches which have not been seen since the days of Salomon.

You got it right!

FSM accepts Ads. Mo People Bitching and Moaning…Brings Mo Money!

Lukas Kendall need to update forums, we are all using the 1968 BR-549 Jr. Samples Prototype. For over 50 Years the same Ol …no way to put emoji’s into my wonderful statements …to show the other miserable bastards how I truly feel.

Please do not kid yourself’s FSM use to be a truly sparkling new Chevy Cavalier, that turned into a Ford Pinto! Insert Wonderful Emoji Here!

It doesn't happen often, but I've reported spammers any time I see them. They usually post random links, which is a dead giveaway.

A recent case was a little more confusing: Conrado Xalabarder.

Out the gate this person posted links but they followed a coherent, if inappropriate purpose of self-promotion.

When it comes to these boards though, if you're starting by doing self-promotion or posting links it's a big red flag. Most legitimate first-time posters will start threads and continue conversations in an organic way, while also contributing to other threads. If that isn't happening with a new poster either, that is also a red flag.

FSM isn't the only place. Messageboards like Maintitles and JWFAN also have a considerable increase in spambots. I don't know if it's the spambots getting smarter, circumventing old technologies or whatever. Obviously, FSM is one of the oldest messageboard interfaces on the interwebz, so presumably it has a hard time keeping them out, but I see it all over the place. Even my own site Celluloid Tunes, even though it (no longer) has a messageboard. I'll have to weed out false accounts and spambot comments to articles all the time, at the same time as I have a good spambot-preventing plug-in.

Also, messageboards in general are old-school these days. As much as I prefer them to newer social media (which is where most discussion seems to happen), we're all basically relics here. Maybe spambots take advantage of that.

In terms of what one could do, an option is to update the entire interface. Obviously, that's too expensive (as Lukas has said). So the only other alternative is for us to be vigilant in reporting them, avoiding to reply in said threads and hoping the mods are equally vigilant in removing them as they come in.

I know its a pain for the mods but its not really that bad. This site gets as many spammers as forums I mod back in 2005. It's just part of the Internet.

Yeah, I mean, maybe I don't see it all the time, but the occasional spammer that gets deleted... so what... no big deal. When I come across an obvious spam threat, I just report it and that's it... no biggie.

We have fewer issues with spammers than we do trolls accounts.

Its an absolute certainty that Bruce Marshall, runningwithscissors, Yor, Danny Gonzalez and the rest of the Legion Of Ativan are still here under new guises. Its only a matter of time before they pull off their own masks yet again.

Well now that "George" has come and gone, I have a new proposal. Report his damn youtube account. That's what he's spamming in the first place.

I would definitely buy a “Possible Spammers - What Should We do?” score. Probably one of the Holy Grails for me. I used to tape the intro music from each episode every week with an old recorder I got for Christmas.

Forgive me. I couldn’t resist.

I didn't care for the sequel. I'm still waiting for the expanded "Possible Spammers" which Varese, as usual, only released with half the score.
