It doesn't happen often, but I've reported spammers any time I see them. They usually post random links, which is a dead giveaway. A recent case was a little more confusing: Conrado Xalabarder. Out the gate this person posted links but they followed a coherent, if inappropriate purpose of self-promotion. When it comes to these boards though, if you're starting by doing self-promotion or posting links it's a big red flag. Most legitimate first-time posters will start threads and continue conversations in an organic way, while also contributing to other threads. If that isn't happening with a new poster either, that is also a red flag.

FSM isn't the only place. Messageboards like Maintitles and JWFAN also have a considerable increase in spambots. I don't know if it's the spambots getting smarter, circumventing old technologies or whatever. Obviously, FSM is one of the oldest messageboard interfaces on the interwebz, so presumably it has a hard time keeping them out, but I see it all over the place. Even my own site Celluloid Tunes, even though it (no longer) has a messageboard. I'll have to weed out false accounts and spambot comments to articles all the time, at the same time as I have a good spambot-preventing plug-in. Also, messageboards in general are old-school these days. As much as I prefer them to newer social media (which is where most discussion seems to happen), we're all basically relics here. Maybe spambots take advantage of that. In terms of what one could do, an option is to update the entire interface. Obviously, that's too expensive (as Lukas has said). So the only other alternative is for us to be vigilant in reporting them, avoiding to reply in said threads and hoping the mods are equally vigilant in removing them as they come in.

Yeah, I mean, maybe I don't see it all the time, but the occasional spammer that gets deleted... so what... no big deal. When I come across an obvious spam threat, I just report it and that's it... no biggie.
