I really enjoyed this series, when I used to watch it, all those years ago. Slow moving, quite sombre, but none the worse for that. Character and politics driven in the main, the station was a hot-bed for tolerance, diversity and/or the lack of it. The series had some fine musical score moments throughout its run*, none more so (for me) than this beautiful piece...

I wish I had DS9 Volume 1 & 2. My interest in that show started after Vol 1 was sold out. I am now at Episode 7x06 and there is a lot of good stuff so far.
"Meridian" was the first episode that had stand out music (maybe because I skipped Seasons 1 & 2). "The Quickening" was also a highlight (DS9 Vol. 2 Track 5). Well... most of David Bell is a highlight for me: the opening and closing of "In The Pale Moonlight", the training montage and anthem of "Take Me Out To The Holosuite" and "Sacrifice Of Angels" of cause.
other Episodes where I remember liking the music are: "Trials And Tribble-Ations" "Our Man Bashier" "Valiant" "The Visitor" "Way Of The Warrior"
and judging by the samples (of episodes I haven't watched yet) Defiant Ending (I hope that title is a lie) from "The Changing Face Of Evil" War Adagio from "The Siege AR-558" "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang"
But seriously, I want that Volume 1 set... Is there really not another copy hidden somewhere in the warehouse MV?
All are great sets and I love the music from DS9 myself. I am grateful that the majority of episode scores I wanted were included, specifically certain cues. While there are still a few that I want (more from One Little Ship, Empok Nor, etc), Im grateful for them.
Dennis McCarthy re-used this wonderful cue, from 1:39 in his brilliant score for "What You Leave Behind", re-orchestrating it to sound more romantic.

I thought the show was mostly a missed musical opportunity that could have used more forceful scoring (especially for the action) but there were times when the composers did really great work.

It may not have been action scoring to your specific taste, but I don't see how anyone can listen to McCarthy's action cues in "Way of the Warrior" and David Bell's battle cues in "Sacrifice of Angels", each performed by orchestras of 40-50 players, and not consider them "forceful".
Bell's and Baillargeon's scores always stood out to me the most on both DS9 and, to a greater extent, Voyager. It's hard to explain why exactly. Both McCarthy and Chattoway are excellent composers but their sound was maybe a little overused in the 90's Treks? I dunno, I don't want to take too much away from their work because they had some really good scores too but, to my memory, Bell and Baillargeon both stood out as being a bit more inventive to my ears. I think it might just be a case of wanting to have heard a bit more from the other composers in the rotation.
B & B didn’t undergo years of Rick Berman “training” on TNG, which was surely to the benefit of their Trek output. McCarthy and Chattaway did, and were even there on TNG when Ron Jones got sacked. I’m sure that had an effect.

I don't know why people write off entire seasons from Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation. I can't imagine depriving myself of "The Measure of a Man", "Duet", "Where No One Has Gone Before", or the Circle trilogy because the seasons are allegedly unworthy of watching. Hell, "Emissary" is my favorite series opener in all of Star Trek.

Exactly! This is from the era when seasons ran 22-26 episodes long - that's the equivalent of 3 seasons of some Netflix shows! Why assume that all 26 episodes can be skipped? That's just madness!
I agree, it would be a shame to watch DS9 and purposely miss an episode like "Duet," or the introduction of Vedek Winn, or Garak, or understanding Odo's loneliness as the only shapeshifter. Yes, they were finding their way early on, as all shows do, but even then, a lot of it is really terrific.
There's a pretty decent argument to be made that DS9's 2nd season is one of its best. There was a lot of meat on this show's bones long before the Dominion became a factor in it, especially if you find the Bajorans interesting.
The reason I started DS9 was because I didn't skip the early TNG seasons and wanted to watch some good 90' trek. Don't get me wrong, TNG has some good episodes in it's early run but also a lot of shit. DS9 had a good pilot but the following episodes didn't hold up imo. So I skipped 'til Ira Steven Behr took over. But when once I've finished S7 I'll come back to S1 & 2.
IMO the first couple seasons of DS9 are pretty weak (I'm rewatching Voyager right now and to my surprise its first two seasons are stronger than TNG or DS9's!)... but Season 1's "Duet" is absolutely the #1 best episode of the entire show, in my opinion... and one of the greatest episodes of any Trek. So skipping that is a major loss.
A good friend of mine at my job who has since retired was a semi-pro trumpet player. I don't think he ever played in an orchestra but he knew a lot of the players with the Boston Pops, New Haven Symphonic and Hartford Symphony on a first name basis. He had a jazz program on a local radio station, and also loved film music.
One time I sent him that final scene from the show - as the camera pulls away from Jake and Kira - with the trumpet solo. He has no love of Trek but I figured the music would be good.
He loved it, and mentioned it several times in the years following. (He also knew who was playing just by listening to it.)
