Laid back jazz cue featuring tambourine and bass flute. (1:00) 2:12 in. About 3:25 in a swinging edgy jazz piece with brass a plenty kicks in for the main title music. (3:54) 7:44 in. Immediately followed by a rock source cue. Rather than split them up and calculate times for both, I decided to leave them as one lump for this thread. Not the cues that are essentially just regular score, like the opening of the closing cue and one or two others. In June, 1967, when the film was being called "New Face in Hell" (a line Peppard's character says in the film, obviously a nod to the title which only makes sense to those who know the original title), Percy Faith recorded a score with a 65-piece orchestra. It was rejected. Then Dave Grusin came in and became the second victim as the film was then being called "Criss-Cross". This score is fresh on my mind, as I rec-recorded select cues from a superior sound quality video for my own listening pleasure and then somebody else I was chatting with via e-mail had never heard it before and loved it. I am wondering why any of the scores have not been released. Universal Pictures is listed as the sole production company and I was kind of hoping La La Land Records might do it at some point, but nothing -- not even a peep from any label. Unless I missed something (which is entirely possible), Universal is still a go for releases and isn't closed off like WB at the time being.
