Is the magazine Soundtrack archived anywhere? I have tracked down individual articles from some of these magazines, but the whole magazines themselves are nowhere to be found on the Internet … as far as I can determine. These magazines are all the small size, 5¾ x 8, black and white, no color. Can anyone fill in the gaps?

No. 3 - Sept-Oct 1975 – Kaper
No. 4 – Nov-Dec 1975 - Run Wild, Run Free
No. 5 – Jan-Feb 1976 - Herrmann
No. 6 – Mar-Apr 1976 - Taxi Driver
No. 7 - ?????
No. 8 – Oct 1976 – The Alamo
No. 9 – Jan 1977 – David Shire
No. 10 – May 1977 – Mancini
No. 11 – August 1977 – Rustichelli

No. 16 – January 1979 – Christopher Lee
No. 17 – April 1979 – Goldsmith

No. 19 – October 1979 – Planet of the Apes
No. 20 – January 1980 – Genevieve Bujold
No. 21 – April 1980 – Lavagnino
No. 22 – August 1980 – Delerue
No. 23 – November 1980 – Fielding
No. 24 – February 1981 – Nascimbene
No. 25 – May 1981 – Goldsmith

The numbering changes here…

No. 7 is Jul 1976 and Richard Rodney Bennett on the cover.

Not sure the legalities for current (or last, before the magazine ended) rights holder, but I agree it'd be nice if they were scanned and available on archive.org/Internet Library. An important part of film music journalism history.

Vol. 2, No. 5 – March 1983 – Morricone
Vol. 2, No. 5 – June 1983 – Bernstein
Vol. 2, No. 7 – September 1983 – Schifrin (Is there a number 6? The months make sense…)

Why should the June 1983 magazine be number 5 and where do you have that info from? It is clearly stated on the front cover with the Bernstein photo that it is number 6.

I assume just a copy-and-paste error from the preceding line when he was building out his list. smile

You are right, I guess I had them out of order or something.

[I fixed this.]

Jeannot Boever obtained permissions from Luc Van de Ven to reproduce past copies of Soundtrack magazine for the Soundtrack Archives website https://cnmsarchive.wordpress.com/. The website also includes archive material from CinemaScore magazine.

I assisted in scanning and reformatting many of the articles, reviews, interviews and other material from the magazine to the website. We did not attempt to scan every issue of the magazine, as Lukas Kendall did with FSM, although in retrospect that would certainly have been useful. Somewhere within the site is a page showing the front covers of every issue but I'm blowed if I can find it now!

25 years ago I've created an "index" to various film music magazines called "ST-MAGS". Officially long gone, but still available in the Internet Archive.

https://web.archive.org/web/20000407132823/http://home.t-online.de/home/sjania/stmags.htm

It's really great to see that some of the information from those days (here contents of Luc's "Soundtrack!" magazine) is recycled today. So all this work was not in vain. My index (still downloadable from the Internet Archive) provides even some more information about the various issues of "Soundtrack!" - and many other magazines.

Today I maintain my list only for private use. If you want a newer copy, you can find my email in the profile. The email listed back in 1999 is long gone. smile

Many thanks Stefan,
Indeed we are here in the domain of fanzines, passionate and documented people! I enjoyed a lot Soundtrack magazine, and found that the publication both in English and in French would have garanteed his life for the long-term and would have prevented his end...

Since I believe you were a reader and member of fanzine MSV (dedicated to Morricone, lead by Martin Van Wouw), and then, of Maestro, our on-line (but printable) serious fanzine on Morricone, why not add these ones?

Feel free to do this. For me this "chapter in my life" has ended about 20 years ago. When you feel the index needs a new life, contact me for the latest version before making any "additions". wink

I know where you can see them!

You can have a look on all the front covers of SOUNDTRACK! QUARTERLY back issues magazines on https://www.moviemags.com/

Here are where they exactly appear:

Issue 1 to 23 (1975 to 1987):
https://www.moviemags.com/main_g.php?title=soundtrack&year=%

Issue 24 to 73 (1987 to 2000):
https://www.moviemags.com/main_g.php?title=soundtrack&start=50&year=%

Issue 74 to 84 (2002 to 2002):
https://www.moviemags.com/main_g.php?title=soundtrack&start=100&year=%

I've been very fortunate to work a bit for that great vintage magazine, this was way before Internet era and even before Film Score Monthly newsletter (than magazine).

SOUNDTRACK! QUARTERLY was published in Belgium and was the main source of datas, infos, filmographies, reviews, interviews etc on paper for film music aficionados in the 70ies to 90ies in Europe. We also got LEGEND, MUSIC FROM THE MOVIES and other nice EU magazines, besides CINEMASCORE and FILM MUSIC NOTEBOOK from the USA.

Luc Van de Ven SOUNDTRACK! editor and publisher is great and I have great respect for him and all he has achieved for film music preservation over the decades, including somes Jerry Goldsmith PROMETHEUS CD releases I am proud to have been involved with.

Thierry - Jeannot Boever would appreciate you contacting him about the French version of Soundtrack. If you don't have his email address perhaps you could reach him through the Contact page: https://cnmsarchive.wordpress.com/contact/

I was a subscriber to Soundtrack collectors quarterly back in the day and I remember picking up a bunch of the earlier issues later on that I had missed when I was kid and unaware of my future passion (starting at the 1982 John Williams issue) which I found in the Cinema bookstore in London. When I moved house I stored away all my film music mags including FSM and some Cinemascores and with the wealth of info available online these days I shamefully haven't unboxed them since. This post has inspired me to do so. I also remember buying a compendium publication Luc Van de Ven put out which compiled articles from the earlier SCN's. Anyone remember that? Now if I can just remember where I stored that box... (-:

Thierry - Jeannot Boever would appreciate you contacting him about the French version of Soundtrack.

Was the French version a standalone magazine or some kind of additional pages to the English magazine, like the German "Spellbound" pages in Soundtrack! #18, #19 and #20 from 1986?

I believe it was a standalone version: https://soundtrackarchive.wordpress.com/

Then it was different to the German version. The German version was very short-lived. Only three issues. The first two had translations of interviews from the previous English issues (Bernstein and Scott) together with some new stuff. The third and final issue had only reviews.

The french pages were only additional pages inside the international english speaking edition.

Most of the stuff featured in the french pages was french translated interviews but some other stuff was original french speaking articles (album reviews, concert reports in Europe or french composer interviews).

I have a few copies of those additional French pages from the early and mid-90s (above all interviews with Philippe Sarde, Serge Franklin, Eric Demarsan or Paul Misraki), but do you know when this French edition started and when it ended? Did it really start at the end of the 70s (or later?) and did it also end with the last regular Soundtrack magazine in 2002 or even earlier?

I have a whole cupboard full of film music magazines. The entire FSM catalogue, for example, as well as many others. I have several Soundtrack! magazines too, but I don't think I could just scan them and put them out. I would need some sort of permission (and lots of time on my hands, obviously). But then others in this thread have already been very helpful with various online resources.
