TUESDAY, MAY 17 SPEARHEAD---trailer released for the Netflix movie starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller. LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfsNfFoA0J0 STAR WARS---new photos were released from the Disney+ Star Wars tv series. Also, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy commented on the future of the STAR WARS franchise and the hiatus after the controversial sequel trilogy and the failed SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, “We all recognized, every single one of us, that this was a new chapter for the company and that we needed to all work together to create the architecture for where we were going. Anyone who comes into the Star Wars universe needs to know that it’s a three-, four-, five-year commitment. That’s what it takes. You can’t step in for a year and shoot something and then walk away…. It requires that kind of nurturing.” Kennedy said the Star Wars television success is due to Jon Favreau's dedication to the franchise, “He’s had a sole focus pretty much on this for the last several years. That’s been a godsend." She added the television success will affect the future of the movies, “I hesitate to use the word trilogies anymore because Star Wars is much more about persistent storytelling”. Kennedy said SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY showed that the iconic role of Han Solo could not be successfully recast with Alden Ehrenreich, “There should be moments along the way when you learn things. Now it does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that.” She said about Rian Johnson's future Star Wars movie, “Rian has been unbelievably busy with Knives Out and the deal that he made at Netflix for multiple movies.” Kennedy also commented on the status of the Kevin Feige Stars Wars movie, “I would love to see what movie he might come up with. But right now, no, there isn’t anything specifically.” Also, Ewan McGregor confirmed his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, will appear in AHSOKA starring Rosario Dawson, “My partner, Mary, is doing that Star Wars series with Rosario and she’s about to start.” He added, “Our little boy has been born into this massive STAR WARS family. He will either embrace it or really go the other way . . . Maybe he’ll be a Trekkie!” PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN---Margot Robbie is in talks to star in the next sequel. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said, “Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without." Bruckheimer also commented on if Johnny Depp might return, “Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.” AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM---Amber Heard testified in Johnny Depp's $50 million defamation trial that the lawsuit publicity and fan petition to have her fired from the sequel led to her role as Mera being greatly reduced in AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM, “I was given a script and then given new versions of the script that had taken away scenes that had action in it, that depicted my character and another character, without giving any spoiler aways, two characters fighting with one another, and they basically took a bunch out of my role. They just removed a bunch out.” THE FALL GUY---Ryan Gosling will star in the movie based on the Lee Majors tv series about a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a bounty hunter. FURIOSA---George Miller commented on the prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy, "I’ll tell you how it’s going when it’s finished, but it has got off to a lovely start. All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting, because even though it’s certainly of that world of FURY ROAD, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about. Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. FURY ROAD happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga." REBEL MOON---Ek Skrein (GAME OF THRONES, MIDWAY) will play the villain in the Zack Snyder/Netflix sci fi movie. DOCTOR WHO---Yasmin Finney will play Rose Tyler in the 60th anniversary special. TRIVIA---while starring in RAWHIDE, Clint Eastwood guest starred as himself in the talking horse tv comedy MR. ED in "Clint Eastwood meets Mr. Ed". The episode also included Donna Douglas, who played Elly May Clampett in THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, as Eastwood's girlfriend.

Kennedy said SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY showed that the iconic role of Han Solo could not be successfully recast with Alden Ehrenreich, “There should be moments along the way when you learn things. Now it does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that.” Wrong, at least in my opinion. I liked Ehrenreich as Solo. As I understand it, the reason fans stayed away from the movie 'Solo' was the wake of their disgust at 'The Last Jedi' and it being release too soon afterwards. I said it at the time, and I'll say it again now, I'd buy a ticket to watch another Solo film with Ehrenreich in it, as long as it was treated with a good script. But, Ian, they can't blame THEMSELVES. They have to blame Alden or the public or, well, ANYONE but themselves.

Of all of the new Star Wars films Solo is second only to Rogue One for me. The only problem with Ehrenreich is his height. Otherwise he's terrific. And Glover is amazing. Solo had ZERO marketing because they didn't want to step on Last Jedi. Sorry, Star Wars, you're not Marvel yet to be playing that kind of crap. And the first thing that got out about the movie was the DUMBEST part where he "gets" his name. Oh, and the damn cinematographer filming everything in the dark because "we live in dark times". (Star Wars was made in the freaking 1970's and they turned the lights on!) I think Kennedy gets a lot of uncalled for crap, but this was ridiculous. (But hey, I wanted them to recast Leia in Rise of Skywalker. Carrie died. Leia didn't.)

And that's why I'm not really excited about anything Star Wars. Everything we're getting has already been dictated by stories that have already been told. And if the Book of Boba Fett is any indication, nobody really cares about telling a story at all. I think there are lots of stories to be told in the Original era. It doesn't all have to have everybody meeting everybody. It's a big war.

My only problem with Solo was that they had to cram every major event in his backstory into a two hour film (actually it was his entire backstory). And why couldn't his name be Han Solo from birth? Otherwise the cast was fine, the music was good and the pacing was great. And The Last Jedi...that was a MUCH better film than anyone wants to publicly admit. It tried to break the damned cookie cutter mold and everyone lost their minds. Rise of Skywalker is just an embarrassment and an apology to people afraid of change and Asians. RoS was a crushing disappointment from the text crawl. Solo was a fun space adventure.
