Sorry if it was discussed already, but is there a reason why this popular score by James Horner was never remastered or expanded? I’m thinking it would be a huge sell. Or is the original just that good?

I think I've heard in similar threads that "enough" of the score has been released but I agree that it deserves some attention, especially for having great music and having been a popular film.

I'd buy it for the film versions of the finale and End Credits Song, ideally with alternate instrumental (with the lush orchestration) Wouldn't be surprised if Intrada or La-La have been working on it for years. Remember there was a slow-down of SONY releases, at one point stated that SONY had ceased granting licenses and later changing their minds, that on top of covid causing a break in things. It's gotta be coming at some point.

The movie came out in 1998 so LLL can release it for a 25th anniversary Black Friday this Christmas?

That would be amazing.

I would love expanded releases for both Horner Zorro scores (I love the sequel score even more).

Or is the original just that good?

I like the original albums quite well, I don’t see how an expansion would improve much on the flow of the music, but it’s been a while that I saw the movies.

I think this comment from Nicolai has been the general tone of the conversation around it, which isn't dismissive of a new release but more just status-quo happy with the current release. It's surprising that there isn't more of a passionate fervor for a definitive release like there are for other scores. Granted, the music does seem well-represented on album but I'd imagine there has to be something missing.

It does raise the question though about other film scores and whether or not there is a score that has been released by the record publisher, not a boutique film score label, that was a perfect representation of the film score right out the gate. My general perception is that 99.9-100% of film scores released when the film came out were always missing at least something.

Actually the flow of the original Mask of Zorro album has always bothered me since I was also a big fan of the film itself. "The Ride" in particular is SO out of order compared with the film, and since I had the story in my head, it always bothered me that this exciting action cue followed third on the soundtrack, after the two prologue cues.

How much is missing from Mask of Zorro?

I watched the film sometime last year and I'd say there's enough missing to warrant an expanded edition. Mostly from the first third of the film there seemed to be a lot missing. And like Yavar said, the flow of the original album isn't very good.

If they can re-issue THE PAGEMASTER, which was missing about a minute or two, I'm sure this one will get the Expanded treatment too eventually.
Of course, with a lot of Horner scores, it's the sound upgrade that can be the sweetener, fixing some of the low lows and high highs that plagued many of his recordings at the time of their release with the film.

It took forever to get An American Tail, Land Before Time, Legends of the Fall, Apollo 13, etc. But we finally got them. I'm sure we will see an expanded and remastered edition sooner than later.

And how about Mighty Joe Young, The Perfect Storm, Enemy at the Gates? Can't wait!
