News of musician Vangelis’s death spread quickly earlier this week causing concern among fans across the world. However the May 2022 report has now been confirmed as a complete hoax and just the latest in a string of fake celebrity death reports. Thankfully, the musician best known for the soundtracks to Chariots of Fire, is alive and well.

Rumors of the musician’s alleged demise gained traction on Tuesday after a ‘R.I.P. Vangelis’ Facebook page attracted nearly one million of ‘likes’. Those who read the ‘About’ page were given a believable account of the Greek musician’s passing:

“At about 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday (May 17, 2022), our beloved musician Vangelis passed away. Vangelis was born on March 29, 1943 in Volos. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.”

Hundreds of fans immediately started writing their messages of condolence on the Facebook page, expressing their sadness that the talented 79-year-old musician was dead. And as usual, Twittersphere was frenzied over the death hoax.

Where as some trusting fans believed the post, others were immediately skeptical of the report, perhaps learning their lesson from the huge amount of fake death reports emerging about celebrities over recent months. Some pointed out that the news had not been carried on any major Greek network, indicating that it was a fake report, as the death of a musician of Vangelis' stature would be major news across networks.

A recent poll conducted for the Celebrity Post shows that a large majority (85%) of respondents think those Vangelis death rumors are not funny anymore.

Vangelis Death Hoax Dismissed Since Musician Is ‘Alive And Well’

On Wednesday (May 18) the musician's reps officially confirmed that Vangelis is not dead. “He joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet,” they said.

Some fans have expressed anger at the fake report saying it was reckless, distressing and hurtful to fans of the much loved musician. Others say this shows his extreme popularity across the globe.

OK, I'm not really sure what to believe now... some reports are saying he died of Covid and his official page seems to confirm his death. WTF...

It is the truth he died in France from the corona virus. His real name is Evangelos Odysseus Papathanasiou born in Greece 29 March 1943.

On the plus side for Vangelis -- if he gets online and reads things (which I suspect he does not) -- he get a rare glimpse into what people say about him after he "dead".

I thought he had died years ago. Now I realize I must have mixed him up with Demis Roussos.

MediaMass is a parody website. They deliberately post false stories with a disclaimer that they are false. The article linked above has such a disclaimer, which links to a page that notes: "The ‘People’ section is a humorous parody of Gossip magazines, all stories are obviously not true." So IF Vangelis is not in fact dead but the victim of a "death hoax," I would not trust this website to report on it accurately.

Here are some Greek websites that appear to confirm his death:

MediaMass is a parody website.

The word "parody" has lost all meaning in the age of clickbait falsehoods. But yes, you're very right, and the news would seem to be true.

This is a shock to the system, but I'm reading conflicting reports on the internet. Don't know what to make of it.

No it isn't. Confirmed by Reuters: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-vangelis-obituary/vangelis-composer-of-chariots-of-fire-score-dies-at-79-idUSKCN2N51L8?fbclid=IwAR2ETqscF8K38_NxirQAI6uKH5_hCX26c3VeixDIzJAUC4QTYMeHNR8HaIw

ATHENS (Reuters) - Vangelis, the Greek composer whose rousing electronic theme music for the Oscar-winning “Chariots of Fire” was one of the best-known film scores of the 1980s, has died at the age of 79, the Athens News Agency said on Thursday.

Citing an announcement from his lawyers’ office, ANA said Vagelis died late on Tuesday, without giving a cause of death.

Or, as he's known in our house, Dennis Rissole!

:-( Ugh, I was just listening to some of his work. I test my new speakers with "Pulstar" from Albedo 0.39.

Same here, Thor. I love so much of what he has done, both in terms of film scores and solo albums...

It will be interesting to see if Ridley Scott and other notables like Hans Zimmer will write or say something about his passing.

Very sad news. Only a few days ago I was listening to his Nocturne album. So much great music through the years, soundtracks and studio albums.

I've never been a huge fan of his work (because Idon't really like electronic music), but I really like the score he did for Chariots of Fire.
