I used to own the UK DVD of the film, and I discovered that one of the foreign language tracks (German, French, I can’t remember) had the Bernstein score in the final mix, instead of the Legrand. I think the track you mention was probably lifted from this, possibly the End Title, as the rest of the score is mixed with SFX and dialog.

Interesting... saw the movie years ago... early 1980s.. I remember it was Steve McQueen's last movie, but I remember that ad campaign from 1980 or so, which may be among the first times I noticed the name "Steve McQueen". Anyway, I never knew Michel Legrand composed an actual score for this. I remember seeing the movie with Charles Bernstein's score, and remember the theme to this day. I know years ago I read somewhere in the context of this film "music by Michel Legrand", but at that time, I simply thought they were mistaken, as the movie I saw had a Charles Bernstein score. Is there any information on this, why the score was replaced and why it wasn't replaced? Apparently, there are then two versions of the movie, one with Legrand's score, one with Bernstein's? And none of them have been released as a soundtrack album. Would be a neat double feature, I'd buy it.

I will check out the Legrand. However, the version of the movie I saw about 40 years ago was definitely the one with Charles Bernstein's score (at the time, I was just getting to know the various "Bernsteins"... I knew Leonard, of course, but there also was an "Elmer", and a "Charles"... were they related? Brothers? Who knew. Sure, now we all know these things, and if not, they are easy to find out, but for a kid in the early 80s, one had to do research). Is there any background info as to who composed the first score (presumably Bernstein?) and why it was replaced, but apparently only for some markets? Or was it always planned to have two different scores for different regions?
