We talk about the Bond scores a lot. Talk about the 2 Flint scores. Talk about a Matt Helm box every blue moon.
But a Harry Palmer box with The Ipcress File (Barry), Funeral in Berlin (Elfers), and The Billion Dollar Brain (Bennett) would be cool.
All three scores have been issued on CD--just the albums--from three different labels, and no score tracks, to my knowledge, have ever been unearthed. Still, it would be a nice set.
When I was growing up I bought the LP of the Konrad Elfers score because I loved the score for The Ipcress File. I was so disappointed. Many, many years later I heard Funeral in Berlin again and found it to quite an enjoyable album.

Yeah, that's a boot. I find it amusing whenever Barry and Bennett end up on the same CD, as Bennett quite disliked Barry's music. (The Whisperers and Equus was another release that they shared.)
TBDB's only legit CD release was as part of FSM's huge United Artist Box.

Pleased to see some love for these scores. As different as they are to each other, all three are absolute favourites.
Despite the inclusion of a number of album-specific recordings of the main theme, there's surely not much of Ipcress that didn't make it to that original playlist. Certainly, all the major setpieces and themes are there (though whether or not they're the film takes is a different matter).
There's a lot more to the score to Funeral in Berlin than just that rather stridant main title theme. A lot of wonderful, silky, melancholic moments, interspersed with some brief, percussive explosions of violence. It packs a lot in to 40 minutes. The Intrada release was remixed from (from memory) 3/4-inch masters, and, sadly, time had taken its toll on the tapes - occasional instances of flutter and drop-out and other damage couldn't help but pop up here and there. I wonder if an alternative source is around that hasn't similarly degraded (or if even just a direct lift from an original LP would be possible as an alternative)? The additional tracks were appreciated, though, depite coming from what sounds like stems, making for a comprehensive, and nicely varied, release. Lovely liner notes, too. A winner!
As for Billion Dollar Brain - absolutely one of my most wanted re-releases. Missed both the FSM and Kritzerland CDs and very much look forward to another label having a crack at it at some point.
Whether anyone is willing to try a release of Rick Wakeman's scores to the two 90s TV movies is another question...
