I have something else for you guys to argue about - the Main Title. I know there's been all kinds of comments on why there's no vocal for the Main Title, but whatever the reason, I personally don't think anyone ever told Maurice Binder, the iconic Bond Main Title designer. Here's why -

Ok. You're crazy!

ATTITW only works in the movie as Barry leads up to it as an emotional scene in the movie. It makes no sense in the credits. As Barry stated, it would have to be a Gilbert and Sullivan type opera march with a title like OHMSS.

Speaking personally with the line "This never happened..." I believe the intention was to jolt the audience into accepting that this was a new Bond. Definitely the reaction it had on me on first viewing, and we were about 20 seconds into the credits before I settled down!

No idea if any of this is of interest here, but been reading this & all the views.

I worked on OHMSS for the UK release & dug out some old notes that I still have in my work files.
These were the comments I made after our screening & getting ready to gear up for the publicity & promotion in the UK.

Pros:
Lazenby – good SC replacement, will go far. Young enough to carry a number of films.
Music – outstanding, LA [Louis Armstrong] All Time will make a great tie in for radio, theme is very exciting & will play well in auditoriums & foyers, need repeat intro version. (This is a version that has a spoken intro – “you’re listening to XXX” then plays theme, then something else from the film, then repeats – drove some cinema managers & staff crazy or you zone out eventually! – we did a tape, 33.1/3 RPM & a 45rpm version.

Film – Rigg great will pull wide from the f / m crowd – need to sell into the woman’s market place. Sad ending, need to keep that quiet until after release, book already out there, but not everyone reads these days! TS is a great villain, can we get him here? Would be good for cross overs

Add campaign from UA – kind of poor hiding the face, we need to forget SC & move forward, USA trailers very good, need UK V/O (voice over), TV spots too short no use for GB (United kingdom)

Cons:
Down beat ending but at least this 1 follows the book

Let SC go, whats with all the reminders ?? bits of the previous films in the tiles, the “other fella” quip is dumb & the props & music from the past films, need to move forward GL is our new JB, sell that forget the rest.

RT is long lose a show a day, makes double bills a problem

If we get the adds out & Rank (Odeon cinemas) will work with us will do very well, if they bulk it will be a problem with the RT, is there a cut down version?

That’s all I wrote & then we thrashed it all out, some adds were changed others not, Rank did work with us & yes the film did exceptionally well, Lazenby left before we even got started, Rigg did not do a great deal & Savalas did turn up & did some odds & ends, the music bombed out on radio play, we did do intro records, seems they were never played as they stated “this theatre” (USA not UK wording) not “cinema” & most managers would not play them!

It was finally doubled billed with Live & Let Die, but I did not work on that.

The rest was well history, I personally stated it was the best Bond to date & to this day many years later it is still my favorite Bond & my favorite Bond score & yes, I even like Lazenby still, who I have met a number of times (worked on Man From Hong Kong among others) & find him very humble (maybe age) & tells great jokes & stories.

OHMSS has always been my favourite 007 film and score.

But here's a question that I've never found an answer for:

Why is the casino track named "Try"???

Was it a theme that Barry had composed before working on OHMSS?

What is the significance of the title, considering that Barry rarely provided titles for his cues?

Is Try an abbreviated version of Tracey which appeared on a track list and someone forgot to write out the full title for the LP?

That was my hunch when I first purchased the LP in 1969 (the night before the film's premiere), but I've never come across any confirmation of it. The problem was compounded by the appearance of the same title on Barry's "Ready When You Are, J.B."

Interesting stuff, thank you. Always loved the film and the music. Even today, older, wiser and maybe more cynical, I still enjoy Lazenby’s performance.

Regarding the title "Try": isn't there a scene, while the tune is playing, when Tracy says something like she finds it harder to find reasons to live--and Bond says "Oh, please, do try." Or something like that.

Watched it at the cinema recently. Lazenby is terrific in the action scenes, but in many of the dialog and silent scenes he lacked belief in his character. At no point did he show what he was thinking, which made him look wooden. They did a great job editing around him. Contrast that to Moore: You know what he is thinking when he doesn't speak, like when he is following Scaramanga, Moore scowls, wanting to kill him.

The score is up front in the mix, which makes you forget about about Lazenby's acting. It's so damn good. Wish more scores were louder in the mix.

I saw OHMSS on the big screen with Lazenby and Bond girls Martine Beswick, Maryam D`Abo and Caroline Munro.

Munro and d'Abo weren't in on her majestys

Neither was Martine Beswick, but I sat with them watching the film. This was a just few years ago. Lazenby said he had not seen the film since the premiere. I find that hard to believe, but that's what he told me. After the film ended I was lucky enough to share quite a few drinks with him and Caroline and Martine. We did not turn in until 3 or 4 in the morning. He even gave me his tux shoes. The stores that man can tell! He pitched lyrics for Lennon`s "Imagine", he was there when Bruce Lee died and he once just left a Rolls-Royce in Moroccan desert. He should write a book. Would be every entertaining, even if only half of it was true. Great guy, and very friendly and amusing to be around. Have some great photos of that evening.

Sure, but can anyone tell me how to post photos. I tried the help page, but can't figure it out.

I only know how to upload images using Photobucket. Do you have access to it? If not, you can e-mail me the images, and I can transfer them to Photobucket and then put them here in this thread. My e-mail address is at the end of my account information. Click on my name.
