SEASON 1:
A 1962 western series that actually found it's origins in a half hour pilot by the same name, in 1958 which aired in a pilot burn-off series called "Decision". No load the full episode could be found, but here is the opening credits frm the pilot:

The show had one spin-off called "Laredo", which I have already covered. The two shows are night and day different in tone.
The theme music is by Percy Faith, until the last season where the show was re-titled ("The Men from Shiloh") and a new theme by Ennio Morricone was used.

Even though I never watched this show growing up in the '60s, only in the past two years have I discovered The Virginian as having been a very good series, often well-plotted, -acted, and -produced; including one of the great musical themes for TV, by Percy Faith. (Or at least it was for the first few seasons, until the main-title sequence was substantially redone to accommodate cast changes... resulting in disappointing edits to the music cue.)
What I add here is that my wife and I came across one involving 1965 episode ("Nobility of Kings") guest-starring Charles Bronson, the wonderful Lois Nettleton, and George Kennedy. Some of this episode's score cues offered uses of brass that made me think, "Whoever wrote this must have paid a lot of attention to Bernard Herrmann." No -- after the end I was surprised to read it was Herrmann himself; and it was very effective dramatically.
Looking it up, I found that during the '60s slump in his feature opportunities, Herrmann scored four Virginian episodes unspecified in the Steven H. Smith's book's indices: "Nobility" was first, followed by "Show Me a Hero" ('65), "The Reckoning" ('67), and "Last Grave at Socorro Creek" ('69). I haven't seen the others yet but will watch out for them.

According to his IMDB credits, this was the first episode of any TV series Hayton worked on. Before that it was films and shorts (a number uncredited). I enjoyed the score. I would have liked to have heard more from him on the show. Not on the same level as Percy Faith's efforts, but good of its own accord.
