SEASON 1:
A 1962 western series that actually found it's origins in a half hour pilot by the same name, in 1958 which aired in a pilot burn-off series called "Decision". No load the full episode could be found, but here is the opening credits frm the pilot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGfPfcX1Mgw The show had one spin-off called "Laredo", which I have already covered. The two shows are night and day different in tone. The theme music is by Percy Faith, until the last season where the show was re-titled ("The Men from Shiloh") and a new theme by Ennio Morricone was used. https://www.dailymotion.com/CaalsanBillisar76ya27/videos NOTE As I recall, most of the uncredited composer credits were curtesy of Jon Burlingame via somebody who was communicating with him and passed the information along to me. I assume they are partial original scoring efforts and not full ones. Attention readers: I have been implementing a system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite one day, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that. The system does not mean that I will make a suite or that one has been made, it's simply for my own reference if and when I do decide to. Even though I never watched this show growing up in the '60s, only in the past two years have I discovered The Virginian as having been a very good series, often well-plotted, -acted, and -produced; including one of the great musical themes for TV, by Percy Faith. (Or at least it was for the first few seasons, until the main-title sequence was substantially redone to accommodate cast changes... resulting in disappointing edits to the music cue.) What I add here is that my wife and I came across one involving 1965 episode ("Nobility of Kings") guest-starring Charles Bronson, the wonderful Lois Nettleton, and George Kennedy. Some of this episode's score cues offered uses of brass that made me think, "Whoever wrote this must have paid a lot of attention to Bernard Herrmann." No -- after the end I was surprised to read it was Herrmann himself; and it was very effective dramatically. Looking it up, I found that during the '60s slump in his feature opportunities, Herrmann scored four Virginian episodes unspecified in the Steven H. Smith's book's indices: "Nobility" was first, followed by "Show Me a Hero" ('65), "The Reckoning" ('67), and "Last Grave at Socorro Creek" ('69). I haven't seen the others yet but will watch out for them.

Some fantastic work in this cue.^ 17:31 in.^ 27:39 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 37:40 in.^ 41:47 in. 44:38 in.^ 52:29 in.^ Second half: 4:37 in.^ 11:19 in.^ 15:25 in.^ 17:11 in.^ 29:17 in.^ 31:23 in.^ "The Stallion" (3) By: Leo Shuken & Jack Hayes Score: http://www.youtube.com/v/ZFLO-0_8KvQ First half: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x80zew2 https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x80zevp Highlights: 3:43 in.^ 10:28 in.^ 12:46 in.^ 13:59 in.^ 15:34 in.^ 19:03 in.^ 30:12 in.^ 35:00 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 39:01 in.^ 42:16 in.^ 46:31 in. I like how they turned the main title theme into a dramatic work for most of the cue.^ 52:12 in.^ 56:50 in.^ Second half: 1:23 in.^ 4:04 in.^ 8:37 in.^ 14:43 in.^ 18:42 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 22:51 in.^ 24:24 in. Another cue that uses the series' main title theme.^ 28:32 in. 29:27 in.^ I'd say this is amongst the series' best episode scores. Including an awful scene where a star talks to the audience -- breaking the "Fourth wall". "The Hero" (4) Music Score: Sidney Fine First half: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x81095d https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x81095m Highlights: 0:54 in.^ 8:24 in.^ 14:47 in. 16:58 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 18:45 in.^ 23:55 in.^ 44:37 in.^ 47:11 in. 51:21 in.^ 54:23 in.^ 58:25 in. Continues into the second half.^ Second half: 9:53 in.^ 13:36 in.^ 14:53 in.^ 20:18 in.^ 27:31 in.^ 32::47 in. The audio goes out-of-sync and starts playing late, over the end and end credits.^ (NtM: 16:16) Out-of-context quote... "I don't pound very easy..."
