David Buckley Scoring Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’

David Buckley (The Good Wife, Angel Has Fallen, The Forbidden Kingdom, Nobody, Papillon, Greenland, The Stranger) has composed the original music for the upcoming Netflix original series The Sandman. The show is based on Neil Gaiman’s DC comic book series of the same name and stars Tom Sturridge, Gwendolyn Christie, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Asim Chaudhry, Charles Dance, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Mason Alexander Park, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jenna Coleman, Donna Preston, Niamh Walsh, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kyo Ra, Razane Jammal, Sandra James Young and Patton Oswalt. The fantasy drama follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic – and human – mistakes he’s made during his vast existence. Gaiman is also executive producing the Warner Bros. Television with showrunner Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy), as well as David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Blade, Foundation). The Sandman will premiere on August 5, 2022 on Netflix.

About half way through this series and loving it! Not over the moon about some of the character changes as a fan of the original source material, but it is what it is and the show’s pulled it all together.
Initially I was disappointed that the composer from the Audible adaption, James Hannigan, wasn’t doing this as there was some great music in that but David Buckley’s score is equally great and perfect for this adaption.
Thoughts anyone?

My wife and I loved the show, actually enjoyed all the changes - because the performances are wonderful across the board. And I'm fine with it when the creator is involved anyway.

In fact, as someone who remembers the whole comics series so well - I inadvertently blurted out "Oh, no, the diner!", which spoiled a bit for my wife who is new to this world - I am mightily impressed with what a good job they did. Was feeling good about it and then "The Sound of Her Wings" just did me in. Love it!

After we watched the first half or so Friday night, I listened to some of the album. I like Buckley a lot and found the music effective but typically unmemorable as is the current trend. But as we finished the show last night, my enjoyment of the score went up about a dozen notches.

We've just watched both The Lincoln Lawyer and Sandman on Netflix this week and thought both were just absolutely right. And who is doing the music for both - Buckley!

I'm sold.

Yeah some of the quieter stuff really hits the mark. The track 'Joanna & Rachel' is particularly good particularly if you've seen the show. The 'duel' with Satan track 'The oldest game' is also great in a more dramatic way.
I'm not familiar with Mr Buckley's other stuff but I'll need to look now.

Some of the casting is... distracting but the show is so good I'm ok with it. There's a definite BR2049 vibe in the quieter moments of the music. Hard to believe they actually managed a good adaptation of The Sandman. World's going crazy indeed.
