The death has been announced of the well-respected French horn player Vince DeRosa, a staple of the Hollywood orchestras during the silver-age era and renowned as the horn player in the famous introduction to Henry Mancini's theme from The Days of Wine and Roses. Here on Youtube is a piece written for and dedicated to DeRosa by Elmer Bernstein - a fitting tribute : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prHzsQq9WBw

Here on Youtube is a piece written for and dedicated to DeRosa by Elmer Bernstein - a fitting tribute : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prHzsQq9WBw My gosh, what a career this man had! Although many people thought of him as Mancini's horn player (which he was) he was also first horn on John Corigliano's Altered States (including all of those exposed solo parts) AND The Great Escape, Experiment in Terror, The Days of Wine and Roses, Mary Poppins, In Harms Way, Our Man Flint/In Like Flint, King Rat (John Barry's first score recorded in LA), The Sand Pebbles, Planet of the Apes, The Professionals, Fantastic Voyage, 100 Rifles, Patton, Monte Walsh, The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, Jaws/Jaws 2, Logan's Run, King Kong (John Barry), Silver Streak, McArthur, Damnation Alley, CE3K, The Swarm, Meteor, Star Trek: TMP, The Black Hole, Time After Time, Wolfen (Safan and Horner scores), ET, Star Trek 2: TWOK, Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, The Natural, Space Camp, Harry and the Hendersons, The Witches of Eastwick (and that is scratching the very tip of the "iceberg"). Also, if you haven't heard his performances on Horner's "Testament," you should definitely check these out (he was the lone horn player in a ten-piece mixed ensemble). And, all of those really difficult horn things on TCF TV productions of the sixties: Batman, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (film version also), Lost in Space, Daniel Boone, 12 O'Clock High, etc.), if it was recorded at the beginning of the season (when the largest number of episodes were scored) Vince is playing first horn, usually with Jack Cave (first horn MGM orchestra from "Wizard of Oz" days to, ca. 1960, end of the contract period), Harry Schmidt (originally member of TCF contract orch), sometimes Henry Sigismonti (Vince's cousin, former co-principal horn of the LA Phil). Oh, remember all those great solos heard in "Rocky V?" That was Vince, the week of his seventieth b-day. Both recording legend (as was the great, recently departed Artie Kane) and humble man. R.I.P., Vince...and thanks for enriching our lives with your great gift. William

Nice one, KeV, had never heard about that CD. There's also a very nice tribute to Vince DeRosa provided by Tim Burden in the latest FSM online edition, for those who tune in...
