Over the years, I've been to plenty of film concerts. Most of the time, they're good enough and you're satisfied with the experience. But sometimes, and not too often, you're sure you've been to a one-of-a-kind, maybe-never-will-be-repeated film music concert that leaves you with this inner warm feeling that you've just been to something really special. This is especially so when those around you verbally share that very same feeling. The Los Angeles Film Orchestra and the robust SoCAL Chorale were terrific. That was my concert experience. Congratulations to Robert Townson and the whole staff and orchestra members who made this such a memorable evening. It was well worth the 3,000 mile trip. And as a bonus, I got to get back in contact with those in the industry with whom I have become friends over the years. It was so good to see so many of them again, including our FSMers Lukas Kendall, Ford Thaxton, Henry Stanny ("Morricone"); also Marshall Harvey, Austin Wintory, Jon Burlingame, and I even got to shake hands with and congratulate John Denney in the lobby as he was leaving. The script was well-written, and many of Basil Poledouris' family, friends, directors, actors, and associates made appearances on the stage. An extensive and well-chosen batch of photographs covering his whole career were spread out all through the concert, making it a very touchingly personal event. Here's the Concert venue: PRE-CONCERT SYMPOSIUM (45 minutes) A warm set of remembrances about Basil Poledouris' career by Jon Burlingame (historian), Richard Kraft (agent), and Doreen Ringer Ross (BMI). FIRST HALF BIG WEDNESDAY (Suite) (1976) (Stephen Allen Fox, cond.) The South Swell Main Title Kaliponi Slack Key The Challenge THE BLUE LAGOON (Suite) (1980) (John Debney, cond.) Love Theme Main Title The Island Three Points To Port End Titles FREE WILLY (1983) (John Frizzell, cond.) Main Title THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990) (Stephen Allen Fox, cond.) Hymn To Red October BASIL POLEDOURIS ACTION MOVIE OVERTURE (Christopher Lennertz, cond.) Under Siege 2 (1995) Amerika (1987) Red Dawn (1984) Iron Eagle(1986) Quigley Down Under (1990) Farewell To The King (1989) THE TRADITION OF THE GAMES (1996) (Mark Watters, cond.) <-----INTERMISSION-----> SECOND HALF LONESOME DOVE (1989) (Steven Allen Fox, cond.) Theme Night Mares (Deets, Newt) Farewell Ladies The Leaving STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997) (Steven Allen Fox, cond.) Klendathu Drop FOR LOVE OF THE GAME (1999) (Steven Allen Fox, cond.) Last Pitch CONAN, THE BARBARIAN (1981) (Diego Navarro. cond.) Anvil of Crom Riddle of Steel Riders of Doom Theology Civilization The Orgy Battle of the Mounds PROLONGED STANDING OVATION <-----ENCORES-----> ROBOCOP (1987) (Steven Allen Fox, cond.) Main Title IT'S MY PARTY (1996)(Robert Thies, solo piano) Robert Townson introduced about 25 of the presenters, conductors, and professionals Everything stopped and they rolled out a grand piano into the middle of the stage. Pianist Robert Thies played an extended solo piano suite while dozens of photos of Basil Poledouris showed (very moving) Then, too soon, Robert Townson thanked us all for coming, the concert was over and the warm feelings began.
