Nice to see my countryman Erik Wøllo get a mention.

Continuing through the shared videos:

Board of Canada is a great outfit, and definitely a kind of electronica I enjoy. But like Bonobo, I don't think of them when I'm in the sweeping melancholy mood. Though Kid for Today does have a melancholy vibe.

Great Hammock and Erik Wøllo tracks here - click 'em if you haven't already. I may share some myself as time permits.

Love Stratosphere Emnity - that's the stuff for me right now! I'm going to go listen to that whole album - Rise - and be back when I can for more. (I love that the first track on the album is "Melancholy" - since that's been my favorite adjective for this stuff.)

So funny, FB - I'm listening to Jenkins' collab with Helpling right now, Found!

Talk about a small world.

And yes, love the piece you shared.

Wow, a lot to get through, very cool.

Hammock and Erik Wøllo were a couple of the artists I was going to feature, but now I don't have to. Great stuff.

Tycho I'm sure I've listened to before, but these tracks really hit the spot. Followed on Spotify!

Bonobo is great, but I hadn't thought of him in this context - but certainly cinematic, especially as that cool and desperate video for Karela demonstrates. (Just not so much the sweeping landscape thing).

Quite enjoying this Voyage Futur Secret Earth album - I'd say this definitely qualifies on the quieter end of the spectrum. Neveh hoid of 'em, but so glad I've been introduced - thanks John...86!

(That's the youtube link that won't work here but works fine on youtube)

And that Ulrich Schnauss Monday - Paracetamol - that's exactly the kind of thing I was initially thinking of. Here I thought I was so knowledgeable, and yet another artist new to me. Reminds me that I need to get to the recent iteration of Tangerine Dream....

I'll get to the rest as I can.

Thanks for all the great artists you all!

With all the good music that I've discovered through this board over the years, it's always nice to return the favor!

Thanks Sean for this thread. Some great recommendations here.

I've just downloaded 'Cinematic' by Erik Wollo. Some excellent stuff there from unreleased scores from 1998-2003.

The recent thread on Patrick O'Hearn started me exploring similar artists on Spotify.

I was looking for the kind of electronic music that really came into its own in the 80's and 90's - imagining desert vistas, nighttime cityscapes, mountain ranges - sweeping mostly electronic landscapes that elicit a sense of loneliness and longing.

So I thought I'd start documenting artists that really appeal when I'm in this mood.

First up - guitarist and electronic artist David Helpling. Literally had never heard of him until yesterday, and already I can't get enough. Here's his first track off the new album IN:

This is a companion thread to one I started long ago, focused more on vintage electronic music and current artists in a more purely synthetic, often driving style.

This is awesome!!!!

So glad to see others posting. My time is not my own right now, so I'm not likely to be here much, but would love any further suggestions. And if/when I can, I'll post some more.

Sometimes beauty is what we need in our lives, and so often music does it best. That's one reason I've always gravitated to both film music and this kind of instrumental music.

Matthew Stewarts album A WORLD BATHED IN SUNLIGHT is very good, in the Helpling/Jenkins vein.

Ok, here is an unusual choice that actually works better for me than I thought it might.

Andrew Tuttle - who plays banjo and electronics - doing a mash up of ambient and kind of Newgrass/progressive bluegrass.

I have a long personal background with bluegrass music, but it's not a favorite of mine. But this is quite effective, and really evokes a lonely rural landscape in my mind. Certainly sounds like it could be film music, not too far away from Michael Brook or Dust to Dust, Steve Roach's project with guitarist Roger King.

Andrew Tuttle - Next week, Pending

And here's a link to the Steve Roach album with Roger King - Dust to Dust. (Can't get the YouTube track to load.)

RIP Mark Shreeve. He was one of the best.

“As Mark’s sibling and long-term musical collaborator, I am devastated that he has left us so soon—not only losing my only brother but also a terrible loss of creativity, capability, and the enormous dedication he had to create quality EM: he was a giant in electronic music and an expert in digital, analogue, and modular synthesis, as well as in production and performance. From early days as very young men when we visited ‘music shops’ to try out synths we could not afford, to performing in many European EM festivals over 27 years, Mark’s passion inspired me to get involved with him and the scene, and to assist him in his earlier music career as well as be a creative contributor to Redshift’s sound and albums. I know he has inspired countless others and has developed a dedicated fanbase whom will also miss him terribly. I hope all of us will continue to value his wonderful legacy for the remainder of our days”. — JULIAN SHREEVE

Yes, sad to hear, df - so glad you turned me on to his early music some years ago! (Long after I had enjoyed Redshift without knowing who was behind it.)

Hey, Sean. Long time. 2022 won't let up. This is horrible.

Something vintage from Larry Fast.
That whole first Synergy album is priceless.
Absolutely first rate.

Oooooh I'll play!

I love this track from the Swans, the noted experimental rock band. A gorgeous and haunting song that slowly builds to a highly cinematic crescendo.

This ultra-short blurb, for me, encapsulates a feeling mentioned in electronic scoring threads that seems to resonate along the lines of the above as well--
