It did reasonably well in international bookings, but was a box office disappointment in the U.S., along with Ice Station Zebra, for MGM and led to a shake-up in rocky studio management at the time.
Alex North's magnificent score was well received and scored an Oscar nomination for best original score. The film's art direction was also nominated
The film won Best Picture from the National Board of Review.

Was so surprised that a lot of the musical material in it was actually reworked music from Alex North's rejected 2001 A Space Odyssey score from that same year 1968. When I heard the Jerry Goldsmith conducted release of North's 2001 I was like, "Oh man." Good for Alex North sticking it to MGM and getting his music out there despite the 2001 thing.
Loved how the Finale of the movie with it's building music during Quinn's Pope speech reaches it's climax and then goes right into the End Cast music. Loved how that sounded. End Cast is an Awesome cue.
Always thought the above image painting of the Cast was a much better cover for the Soundtrack. On the Original LP that Artwork was on the backside of the Album and the Original Cover had the Angry Asian Guy on the screen with Quinn and Olivier standing there. Painting is so much better for me.
I can distinctly remember seeing 2001 on the Big Screen at the Century 21 Dome Theater in San Jose in the summer of 1968 and in the lobby they had a Huge Standing Display Set-up Advertising THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN which came out later that year. It almost took up one whole side of the lobby it seemed and was most impressive.
Starting at 1:45 in Ron's above first post youtube Suite is where you hear North's reworked 2001 music that would have taken the place of the famous Also Sprach music that Kubrick ultimately used instead of the North piece.

FWIW, MGM was not responsible for Kubrick's decision to dump North's score for "2001". And, MGM also released "Shoes of the Fisherman", so the studio got North's score.
