This Saturday's (Aug 20th) edition of Sound of Cinema on BBC Radio 3 features "Lalo Schifrin at 90" - 'Lalo Schifrin, composer of jazz-infused scores for Mission : Impossible, Bullitt and Dirty Harry, turned 90 this year. Matthew Sweet looks back on his career and music.'

No word of any interview material, but it should still be worth a listen.

Happy to hear this.

If Schifrin had dedicated himself primarily to film scoring there's no telling how far he would have gone. Frankly, I'm glad he didn't. Many of his jazz albums--under his own name or composed works for Gillespie or Paul Horn--are masterpieces.

many of his film/tv scores are, too. He was versatile, inventive, and arguably his best scores span several genres--The Fox, Cool Hand Luke, The Cincinnati Kid, Che!, and Bullitt, for instance.

Many years ago Schifrin came out to Australia and did a concert in the Sydney Opera House, featuring the Australian jazz trumepter James Morrison. I remember when the Mission: Impossible theme was played as an encore thinking "I'm never going to here this theme again played live like this with a full 100 (ish) piece symphony orchestra". It was heaven.

Och, MacMillan - what avant-guard Schifrin music did the Beeb broadcast?

Well, they did play a few minutes of his discarded music for The Exorcist. But I had to draw the line at the ending, some pop group (Portishead??) "sampled" one of Schifrin's themes. It was awful, so I reached for the "off" button.

For whoever might be interested, the playlist was thus :

MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE (with voice-over)
COOL HAND LUKE (Tar Sequence)
ENTER THE DRAGON (with voice-over)
THE FOX
THE FOUR MUSKETEERS
RUSH HOUR II
THE AMITYVILLE HORROR
THE EXORCIST
TANGO
DIRTY HARRY (with voice-over intro)
BULLITT (Four cues from the WB album)
"Our Time" by pop group (?) Portishead, "sampled" from "Danube Incident" from the Dot MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE album, for whoever cares.

A crappy ending, then to a fairly balanced and respectfully presented 90th Birthday Tribute to a great musical genius.

To be fair to Portishead, they include Geoff Barrow of Invada Records. https://www.invada.co.uk/

Barrow is also a film composer. Portishead is an English band that has been making music for over thirty years so color me surprised that people wouldn't know them.
