I was thinking about doing a walk past the Queen’s Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall (just for history sake really), it's from Wednesday to Monday 24 hours a day. They estimate a million people, but it's thought that that's a huge underestimation & it will be a great many hours of queueing.

Confirmed that President Biden is going to the funeral on Monday.

I read that she's still alive and controlling the World Shadow Government with JFK and JFK Jr. from the lunar south pole.

My oldest brother was 2 weeks old at the time of the royal wedding, another was born less than a handful of months after Royal Wedding hit the cinema, and I came along in the 4th year of her reign. Man oh man she’d just been doing the royal schtick for as long as we’ve been around and we ain’t no spring chickens! What a time to go. The world’s as upside down as Fred Astaire in that flick.

Howard, I remember her coronation on tv. They even released a movie of her tour of the
Commonwealth nations, I believe in CinemaScope.

Elizabeth's coronation was a bit early for CinemaScope. The first CinemaScope film that was shot, HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, had just wrapped production two months before her June 1953 coronation. Her coronation film was in Technicolor only.

But by the time of the Royal Tour, which began in November 1953, and lasted seven months, visiting 13 countries and covering more than 40,000 miles, CinemaScope cameras were available. The 1954 film was released under the title FLIGHT OF THE WHITE HERON in Britain.

In the U.S., the opening titles of the film read: "Twentieth Century-Fox Presents Flight of the White Heron, The Commonwealth Tour of H.M. The Queen and H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh." The film was released in the U.S. in July 1954.

At the end of the opening credits, two written forewords appear:

"'O stranger from beyond the horizon,
The Rare White Heron of the Single Flight;
welcome to this outflung post of your Empire.
Queen of a mighty Throne,
built on the affections of countless peoples,
enter your domain.'
(Maori Greeting to Her Majesty)."

The second foreword reads:

"'From beginning to end this royal pilgrimage has reasserted human values
and given a new pre-eminence to the grace and dignity of life.'
The Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill."

Well I went & saw the Queen's draped coffin arrive at RAF Northolt (I should really say depart by hearse from RAF Northolt)) the airdrome is only down the road from me. A massive amount of people there (& almost as many police), but I was quite near the exit & got a good view of the draped coffin (the hearse was glass all round & well lit from the inside). So I witnessed a bit of history.

Despite meeting many minor or incidental “celebrities”, the royals have always been primarily about ordinary people who have achieved things out of the glare of publicity .

I'm confused by this statement. The royal family is as far from "ordinary people who have achieved things out of the glare of publicity" as one could possibly comprehend.

About MEETING ordinary people who have achieved things. There were many garden parties at Buckingham Palace where anyone who had done good work for their community could be invited, for instance.

Another example: My late brother (a 30-year paramedic) was introduced to the Queen as he was chosen to represent his ambulance service. There’s a picture of him looming over her which we generally have on display with other family photos. Not unpacked fully yet after a recent house move, otherwise I’d show it here.

If you get a chance TG, I would love to see that picture.

I realise this sounds like the start of a joke... but I once went to one of the garden parties at the palace. Saw Queenie fairly close up as she walked past us on the way to where she was sitting.

Heck of a garden. Lovely to wander about. And I remember the brass bands playing some Goodwin and Williams smile

Today I watched some interviews with people who had met the Queen. One lady was at one of the garden parties you've mentioned. She was being introduced to the Queen when suddenly her cell phone rang. The Queen said "You had better answer that. It might be someone important." Can you imagine the mortification?

Love that story erik.

Well, big jim, when you are a superstar broadcaster, guitar maestro and voiceover magician, its not surprising royalty wants to be seen with you. Lol

One of my fond memories is singing God Save The Queen every morning in my Grade 1 class.

We did the same thing here only called it My Country ‘Tis of Thee. Took years to discover from whom we stole the melody. roll eyes

'You' didn't really steal it. The words and music had been around for quite a while before it became, by a circuitous route, 'our' national anthem at the time of Victoria's accession to the throne. The article below seems to be a reasonable one in tracing its history, even though it was apparently written for the previous change of monarch in 1953:

Thank you, Ian!
