The great Greek tragedienne, indelible as the widow in ZORBA THE GREEK, has passed away at 96. Her first Hollywood leading role grabbed my notice. As Jocasta(!), James Cagney's improbable ranch wife in TRIBUTE TO A BAD MAN, she gave Miklos Rozsa an excuse to develop a beautiful Greek theme in the context of a Wyoming Western. She even sings in that one. "Pandrevoun" is a Greek folk song. The FSM album preserves her prerecording, as the film version is lost.

I mostly connect her with Vangelis, and to be honest, she was never my favourite part of his work. However, she was a legend in her own right, with an incredible career. Now she can have an ouzu with her old Greek friend in the afterlife.

Interesting bit (via Wikipedia) from Roger Ebert:

The film critic Roger Ebert observed that there were many "pretty girls" in cinema "but not many women", and called Papas a great actress. Ebert noted her uphill struggle, her height, 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m) limiting the leading men she could play alongside, her accent limiting the roles she could take, and that "her unusual beauty is not the sort that superstar actresses like to compete with."[35][36] Ordinary actors, he suggested, had trouble sharing the screen with Papas. All the same, her presence in many well-known movies, wrote Ebert, inspired "something of a cult".[35]

Curious business about her height. It seemed to bother Spencer Tracy (originally cast in TRIBUTE TO A BAD MAN) but evidently not James Cagney, though Papas would have towered above the 5'5' actor. Tracy, however, had health and alcohol issues at the time .

Harry Saltzman wanted her to play Irma Bunt in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" but she was rejected.

There was talk for quite a few years of her doing the bio of Maria Callas.
