I'm not a huge fan of Balfe ( although I enjoy a number of his scores ) , and I'm not one of those who always has the knee-jerk "Gawdddd nnoooooo" reaction to just seeing his name :,
But anyone thinking Faltermeyer would be hired to score a major feature on his own these days has a couple of screws loose.
Faltermeyer recording a fart and using it to re create the main theme would surpass anything Balfe could do.

I used to agree with you, but Balfe has stepped up his game recently. Rumble and Black Widow are both genuinely good/great scores.
Any news on this? Its supposed to be out this year yet no info on composers or even a trailer.
Whilst we are waiting, I though I would mention an artist who I think would have been absolutely perfect for such a film.
Ironically, a German!
I came across this artist years back, they primarily make house music, but they delved into some 80s ideas on many tracks.
A lot of the tracks have a distinct 80s feel albeit with some updated sounds which mesh perfectly. They even use the same Faltermeyer DX7 bass sounds in several tracks.
You will notice the warm synth tones and even the guitar sounds direct from the 80s. Nothing sounds cheesy, it sounds very clean and crisp.
I really think this guy could pull off a great score as the sound selections are extremely tasteful and give the perfect feel for something like an action film like Beverly Hills Cop. If this guy was put in charge of a film score, he would deliver, I have have no doubt!
If you ever listen to them on headphones you will see how amazing well mixed and produced they are!
Here are some selections I recommend listening to:

And from my angle, Jungleland and Ambulance really stuck with me and still get rotations. Both couldn't be further from tone and style, either. Balfe seems like one of the most dedicated professionals working right now. If you want the score for your movie to sound bland and interchangeable, he's got you. If you want it to strike a chord and let him loose, he can accomplish that too. Not all music can be to everyone's tastes but when we take our heads out of our asses and find something that works for our tastes then great surprises await!
