TV MOVIES:

Short-lived series from 1974.

Theme music by Gil Melle.

NOTE: Archive.org has a wonky video player. You must wait for the page to fully load, then click on the episode in the list to make the correct episode player, regardless of the link you use. Otherwise the video player will just load the first episode in the list. And if the page doesn't load fully, it will also fail to play or play the wrong episode. Archive.org pages tend to load slowly, so be patient.

Attention readers: I have been implementing a system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite one day, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that. The system does not mean that I will make a suite or that one has been made, it's simply for my own reference if and when I do decide to.

"The Night Stalker" (feature-length TV movie from 1972)

  • 1:02:07 in. Cobert's music for the last three or four cues full of tension and drama just really sold the whole thing.^
  • 1:13:07 in.^

The score has that weird echo sound you hear on some scores recorded in Canada during that time, and if it was record there, the equivalent of the Canadian AFM, won't play ball on the re-use fees, and it makes it too expensive to release scores recorded in Canada.

    * = Sorry, but some of the ammo he gets hit with, even if it doesn't kill a vampire, would rip parts of him off and/or put holes in him.

I don't know if my computer has gone wonky, but when I click on ALL the links you've provided, Justin, I get "The Night Stalker" every time. Going to the archive.com files directly from any of those Night Stalker uploads, I can choose the correct episode. I'm probably doing something wrong again.

Oh, sorry about that; I keep forgetting to make a note about it on each TV series thread. Archive.org as a wonky video player. The page has to load first, then you have to click on the episode and then it will load.

Firefox, for example, as a thing on top that shows the page is loading. Archive.org tends to load slowly. Expect a wait.

It's the score from "They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be..." There's three episodes on the boot, this one, "The Ripper," and "The Vampire."

Only the main/end titles for THE QUESTOR TAPES are on the boot.

    "The Spanish Moss Murders"
    NO COMPOSER CREDITED
    https://archive.org/details/kolchak-4/KOLCHAK+09+-+The+Spanish+Moss+Murders.mkv

For what ever reason, this is the only episode of the series to not have an original score. If any of you recognize specific episodes any of these cues are tracked from, please do post them.

(Score: 2:03 and the next cue [next cue: Fielding, from one of the recent prior episodes], 10:31, 16:01, 17:56, 18:57, 25:40, 30:57, 33:01, 42:59 [pretty sure this is Fielding, at least the opening should be], 48:07, and 50:48)

    "The Energy Eater"

This is the only effort by De Jesus for the series.

  • 16:19 in. Dramatic chugging music for a nurse just walking to a room.^

  • 32:49 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(both)
  • 38:56 in.^

Based upon this single effort, I'm glad he didn't get to do more episodes. He wasn't a fit.

1:22 in (the opening cue) is tracked from a prior Fielding score.

So, if Kolchak thinks the Capitol Records building looks like a stack of flapjacks, then surely this hospital must look like stacked breasts, right?

In the Fielding papers at BYU, this episode goes under the title "Diablero":
    http://files.lib.byu.edu/ead/XML/MSS2116.xml

I've had difficulty locating "Diablero" within this site - I saw it just once near the end with respect to paper manuscripts, but I haven't seen this title in the section of recording tapes.
[interestingly, these below do not refer to 'Kolchak' - they are denoted "Nitestalker" for 'The Night Stalker']

7-inch Open Reel Audio Tape Recordings:

    Box Tape Contents

    72 8 #41805 - “Devil’s Platform.” Complete score. Roll # 1. Nitestalker. 7½ ips
    72 9 #41805 - “Devil’s Platform.” Complete score. Roll #2. Nitestalker. Full track 1800' 7½ ips
    72 10 #41819 - “Doppelganger.” Complete score. Nitestalker. 1200'7½ ips
    72 11 #41803 - “The Werewolf.” Complete score. Roll #1. Nitestalker. 1200' 7½ ips
    72 12 #41803 - “The Werewolf.” Complete score. Roll #2. Nitestalker. 1800 7½ ips
    72 13 #41815 - “The Rakshasa.” Complete score. Roll #1. Nitestalker. 1200' 7½ ips
    72 14 #41815 - “The Rakshasa.” Complete score. Roll #2. Nitestalker. 7½ ips
    72 15 #41824 - “R.I.N.G.” Complete score. Nitestalker. 1200' 7½ ips

Seems that the episode titles themselves underwent last-minute changes multiple times.
    "Doppelganger" I think is "FireFall"
    "R.I.N.G." became "Mr. R.I.N.G."
    "The Rakshasa" is the Jimmy Sangster episode which was ultimately broadcast as "Horror in the Heights";
this segment credits Greig McRitchie as composer, so I wonder if Jerry Fielding provided raw material to orchestrator McRitchie and let him have sole credit?

    Continuing SEASON 1:

    "Horror in the Heights"
    By: Greig McRitchie
    https://archive.org/details/kolchak-4/KOLCHAK+10+-+The+Energy+Eater.mkv

This is the only effort by McRitchie for the series.

    Highlight:
  • 1:22 in.^
  • 4:02 in. I'll have to double check at some point, but that bustling city music might just be tracked from "Bad Medicine".^
  • 13:40 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 19:24 in.^
  • 22:01 in.^
  • 23:47 in.^
  • 27:10 in. Stops for two or three seconds, then continues.^
  • 33:17 in.^
  • 39:20 in.^
  • 42:05 in.^
  • 46:08 in.^

Unlike De Jesus, I think McRitchie got it and I would have been okay hearing more from him on the show.

For some reason, his written score is in the Fielding papers at BYU, under the title "Rakshasa". As he orchestrated for Fielding, I suspect he probably sent Jerry a copy of the written score to look over before it was recorded.

  • 26:35 in.^
  • 28:52 in. And more bustling brass work after the commercial break.^
  • 31:21 in. This just doesn't readily sound like Fielding to me; maybe it was additional music by another composer, or tracked from another series.^

    Finishing SEASON 1:

    "Demon in Lace"
By: Gil Melle and Jerry Fielding (yes, they are both credited together, and in that order)
    https://archive.org/details/kolchak-4/KOLCHAK-16+-+Demon+In+Lace.mp4

  • 32:45 in.^
  • 36:55 in.^
  • 43:59 in.^
  • 48:45 in.^

I'm going to assume there's little to no original score and the reason both composers are credited, is because it's tracked from both.

2:40 in: There's that same cue again. This is the fourth time it's been tracked. If it keeps getting tracked, I may be able to make a nearly clean copy of it.

    (NtM: 40:31, 49:54)

    https://archive.org/details/kolchak-4/KOLCHAK-17+-+Legacy+of+Terror.mp4

This is the final episode to have both composers credited, and also the final on screen credit for Melle.

Kolchak: "Yeah, and you know what you're full of?"

    "The Knightly Murders"

  • 44:15 in.^

"Kolchak" is a Polish name, according to Kolchak. Imagine a sophisticated robbery using ancient magic and spirits, which Kolchak has to investigate, where he in the process meets Banacek.

2:06 in: I think this is tracked from a prior Fielding-scored episode.

    Highlight:
  • 1:24 in. Action music opens this cue with fast-paced strings and percussion.^

  • 12:02 in.^
  • 28:01 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(second)
  • 37:52 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 41:09 in.^
  • 42:48 in.^
  • 44:41 in.^
  • 48:30 in.

Lord that costume is awful. Almost reptile "Star Trek"-level bad.

5:32 in: This should be tracked from a prior Fielding-scored episode.

15:15: tracked. I think this is part of that cue that's been tracked four times, as previously mentioned.

33:37 in: sounds like an edit job. I think I hear part of the cue that's been tracked maybe (including this one) six times now, and part of the big Indian music (for example).

    (NtM: 11:56)

And that concludes the series. There were two fake TV movies, which were nothing more than edit jobs of episodes of the series. There were no spin-off's, continuations, or reboots. There was, however, a remake in 2005. See you Tuesday for that series.

By the way, a third TV movie was written but not filmed:
    https://darrenmcgavin.net/kolchak-the-night-stalker-the-unproduced-scripts/

In 2012 Disney had a script commissioned for a film version to star Johnny Depp:
    https://deadline.com/2012/05/d-v-devincentis-sinks-teeth-into-the-night-stalker-275128/

In 2014 Edgar Wright was going to be the director. No further news passed 2014 could be found. The project apparently died years ago. Not content with not doing a needless remake, currently Wright is set to direct a remake of "The Running Man".
