Interestingly enough though my big classical music fan mate listened to it after me pushing him and said it was sparce, grating and unlistenable!! To each their own big grin

Does your friend like music from folks like Harry Partch, György Ligeti, Terry Riley, Henry Cowell, etc.? I'd probably only recommend this one to Classical folks who already enjoy some of the harsh experimentalism that the mid-20th Century masters really capitalized on (or offended with).

I just saw the movie last night and thought the music was almost perfect for the film--appropriately ominous. As far as I could tell there was only one concession to horror scoring cliches--one musical blast to accompany a visual meant to be shocking but really wasn't.

Branagh clearly wanted this soundtrack for his movie and, I suspect is less than interested in the views of soundtrack fans who find the score difficult to engage with, particulary as a standalone listen.

You're probably right, Peter, nor does he likely care that I didn't appreciate it as a film score either. wink

Good call on that final cue, though - now having seen the movie, it was the only part of the score that I thought contributed anything. Otherwise, all the atmosphere (which is really this score's main objective in accencuating) was already present. As brief as the score is, I found it surprisingly redundant.

Also, other than the marvelous cinematography throughout and a solid production design, the movie didn't engage me at all. I liked the previous two films, but admittedly, it was Branagh's wonderful performances that carried them for me. Not on this one.

Doyle responds briefly but affably to a query beginning at about 56:20.

And Spinmeister, agreed re: the NILE score; I actually prefer it to ORIENT.



Interesting, thank you very much. The fellow FSMer that brought up that post concert Q&A in the first place (wasn't Erik Woods, he referenced it later) said that Doyle answered that he was free to compose the score for the film, and therefore the coronation commission didn't cause any scheduling issues. However here we can clearly see and hear that Doyle unambiguously answers that "the coronation was part of the reason" besides the fact that Branagh ultimately decided to go in another direction music wise.

That to me implies that Branagh decided to go in another direction with the score BECAUSE Doyle wasn't avalaible.

Mystery solved, I guess.
