"It's only October 30th, Hurdy. What are you doing listening to Christmas scores? I find this okay, but a little too on-the-nose/saccharine (and the sampled instruments don't help!), which is a trap McKenzie sometimes falls into" ------------------- Although they can guide me from time to time, I'm not as hung-up about playing holiday-themed scores ONLY at the time of said holiday. Sure, I will hit a little harder the horror scores at Halloween, Xmas scores at Chrimbo etc, but that's not to say I won't listen to them at other times throughout the year. Good music is good music (and there are scores like JINGLE ALL THE WAY by David Newman, that are balls-to-the-wall action scores, which sound ace no matter what time of the year you're playing it). And to your point about the samples, I find this score largely avoids that trap. Maybe it's higher quality samples(?) or MM's adeptness in orchestrating, but there's a spaciousness and greater acoustic & dynamic range/effect, between the piano and harp and strings and percussion etc, which avoids that tinny/thin sound that can arise with many sample-based scores. To my ears at least. And yes, it is sugary, but as noted above, that's the point.
