I just ordered it... along with Conan... it's a rather silly expenditure for me, as my music reading skills are school level and I'm not a practicing musician, but these are great scores, truly great scores, and I want to look at their DNA.
Nonsense! No matter your skill level, score reading is incredibly helpful. I’ve heard this score so many times, luckily I can just read the book without listening accompaniment, but going through it with the Intrada CD release is beneficial. There is also a very detailed theme/motif analysis as well as a cue-by-cue breakdown by Erik Heine. This helps to provide added insight before studying this masterpiece.
And, even if you don’t read music too well, you can get an idea of the orchestration that Goldsmith applied. I haven’t seen a ton of scores where there was as much attention to divisi breakdown in the strings ie Vln 1 (8+4) then Vln 2 (4+8). This added detail shows how Jerry fortified his chordal work in the strings to ensure the harmonies were coming through. It’s something we in the orchestral sample universe often overlook.

Well, I just received ALIEN and CONAN THE BARBARIAN in full score. Excellently packaged, they arrived here without the slightest dent. (They already tried to deliver it yesterday, but at a time nobody was at home.) Quite fast, I am happy to say.
Have not yet opened the shrink wrap, but hooray, they are exactly the same size (height) as the Omni scores I have, so that's great in the shelf.
Very much looking forward to taking the time and have a look at these scores.

Yeah, that's how I use the scores. I'm sure not a Salieri who looks at the page and "hears" the music, but I can find my way around a score. In fact, one of the benefits (and reasons) why I bought a few scores is to brush up on my score reading skills. I have a few scores by classical composers, but always would have loved to take a look at Goldsmith's scores for STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE or ALIEN. Well, now I can.
