No offense to Kantelinen (who I like), but one of my favorite living composers is Finnish and composes for film: Panu Aaltio! (Home of Dark Butterflies, the “Tale of” nature documentary trilogy). After the passing of Jerry Goldsmith, my favorite living composer was Rautavaara but alas he never composed any film scores. Of course there is the *original* Finnish film composer Armas Järnefelt, who wrote the very first full length original film score in any of the Nordic countries — the wonderful Song of the Scarlet Flower (1919), which has fortunately received a complete new recording from the excellent Ondine classical label: https://www.gramophone.co.uk/review/järnefelt-song-of-the-scarlet-flower Yavar

I know Finnish composers I like a lot; I've been and still am on a Sibelius trip right now, and I like composers like Joonas Kokkonen and Aulis Sallinen. Another favorite of mine, who is an exciting composer but who is perhaps better known for also being a marvelous conductor is Esa-Pekka Salonen. Salonen is one of my favorite living composers, bar none. His music is very close to me. Can't think of any specific film composer though.

I know of Kantelinen and Salonen. Salonen has actually written film music. But no, I dont think I have ever seen a finnish film or series, even though I'm from Norway.

Salonen has actually written film music. Oh, interesting, wasn't aware of that. I know Salonen liked Jerry Goldsmith a lot and at one time intended do a Goldsmith concert and also wanted to commission another composition. (It's from an Interview with Salonen I read years ago... would have to check if I can still find it.) Salonen is a first class composer, who also happens to be a first class conductor.

Kantelinen, Seppä, Aaltio, obviously. But also Pessi Levanto. His score for the Norwegian horror movie THE INNOCENTS is effective in the film, but static drones don't work that well on album. Instead, his airy, Williamsesque score for SAATTOKEIKKA is recommended. Anssi Tikanmäki is a veteran and a good one. Certainly his scores for Aku Kaurismäki, but first and foremost his lush score for THE GIRL KING is worth checking out. I've participated in the Nordic Film Music Days & The Harpa Award for many years, and run into many other Finnish composers, like Sanna Salmenkallio last year (her score for AALTO won the award), but never really checked out their other work subsequently.
