I got caught by this guy. I bought HOOK months back. I was thrilled I’d got it for a good price and had thought it was the proper thing. Got it through and it looked pristine and I couldn’t tell if it was a fake. The fact the guy was selling a few and had been selling a few before was worrying though. The problems started when I played it and it started skipping on both discs. Stupidly I’d already left positive feedback on eBay on receipt of it. I contacted the guy and said was there any chance he could replace it. The guy said sure, asked to check my address and then I never heard anything more from him even after a few more e-mails. My own stupid fault. I guess if something looks too good to be true.. it usually is. So they go to the trouble to have factory CDs pressed (as opposed to CDRs), but then they are not even working? (I mean, simple CDR copy should work, leave alone a pressed CD, counterfeit or not.) Who would have thought that in our time, there would be a ring of counterfeit CD pressers.

Honestly..i was probably just unlucky with the playback issue. I'm usually on the ball for this kind of thing and it was only really the price that made me suspicious. Looking at it, it seemed totally legit - packaging and discs! There is feedback from others that had bought them that seemed quite happy so the payback issues were with me ( I tried multiple players, by the way) Did it come with the booklet an liner notes?

That's pretty elaborate for someone pull off, booklets, pressed CDs... I can see how this would be tricky to spot. I find this really weird, because while bootleggers and fakes were always around, these are obviously "professionally" made fakes. I would not have thought that producing these would be a worthwhile past time.

There was a thread a while back about counterfeit copies of Ghostbusters, and I believe someone has posted in this thread that the way to spot those was some spelling mistakes in the track listing. That itself is mindblowing because it means they’re reconstructed booklets. Not even just high quality copies. I reported every copy of Hook that this particular seller listed on eBay for about a month. At least one a week. Nothing came of it. But selling that many copies at prices ranging from £20 to £100 we can see how it might be profitable to put money into making them in the first place. It’s maddening and frustrating to see. There are two CD’s in my collection which I question a little in terms of legitimacy. Maybe three. And the thing that winds me up the most about it, is whoever is behind it obviously knows of and understands our community of collectors. That’s really sad. Rolex’s and handbags I get…. Huge markets and I’m sure they shift huge numbers. But film score CD’s? There’s not that many of us in the grand scheme of things, and one of us might be a crook.
