Good point on the Ennio duffers over the Jerzy duffers, numbers wise, Bill.
Although around here, 90% of the FSMulation will have suffered through the JGs, while less than 10% will even be aware of the EM stinkers.
Goldsmith always seemed to offset one quality or well received film with 3 whoppers that stunk out the place.
Although something like Damnation Alley is unlucky, in that it was TCF's BIG Sci-Fi tent pole for 1977 until that other little space film opened around the same time, stuff like The Swarm and Players and Inchon and Rent A Cop and those Euro thrillers I mentioned above...
I guess he just loved money.

I think with Jerry he saw the chance to do something he thought was musically interesting. Big Latin requiem, Latin American, a fandango( or whatever Caboblanco is). He liked doin' stuff.

Many-many Morricone scores for Italian or French movies from the 70s-80s or even 90s.

Elaborate. Examples.

The Humanoid

(drops mike)

Bloodline lol

You mean, Bloodline is not a good film?

Another one, not so great film The Island (or how to turn a child into a robot-like murdering beast) with Michael Caine.

I still like to see examples of bad French films scored by Ennio. I don't think there are any. But I haven't seen all of 'em.

Bill’s right, annoyingly. At least with The Humanoid you can have fun spotting the Star Wars rip offs. Bloodline is grotesquely miscast and has no redeeming feature save the music.

Krull is a good shout.
I'm amazed Goldsmith didn't bag that one.
He must have taken the week off.

I always wished the Jaws sequels were as great as their scores.

The Final Conflict is another one that comes to mind.

I’d have to go with The Swarm. Such a shit movie but Goldsmith’s score is sensational and infinitely superior to the film it supports.

That’s true of a lot of Goldsmith scores of course - I remember getting King Soloman’s Mines and Lionheart years before seeing the movies and whilst both scores were incredible, the respective movies were…. well apparently I’m not allowed to use “silly hyperbole” (aka “my opinion”) so let’s just say they were erm…. not very good.

But joking aside, Goldsmith certainly picked a fair share of clunkers ti score, but he never seemed to approach them with anything less than total commitment and enthusiasm.

The Swarm is one of those movies that, thanks chiefly to the score and a cast willing to chew the scenery, is something of a hoot. I just find it fun and funny because of the false energy the score provides that makes it feel like something is really happening here even when it's lame. I just have this silly affection for the movie.

Offer me any of Vincent Price's early 1960s pictures as a substitute for Tim Burton's ... please.

You're on to something, Mr. Zardoz.

Stretching his creative wings. A man who enjoyed a challenge.
