A few months back, and spurred by his death in 2022, I took a deep plunge into Artemiev's work, and wow -- it's something to get lost in. I had no idea he had such an enormous body of work behind him. Hundreds of films, shorts, TV works, theatre music and beyond. I'm mostly into his electronic music, and of that the more lyrical/ethereal kind, but found plenty of other interesting things too. For fans of Soviet Wave electronica (hey, Jim!), Artemiev is obviously the shining beacon.

Anyways, here's what ended up, digitally, in my now curated collection (some of these, I've obviously had for years):

EVERY HUNTER WANTS TO KNOW (1986) -- gorgeous synth score with some Vangelis vibes, and shimmering textures that reminded me of Silvestri's 80s stuff
URGA (1991) -- some synths, some ethnic instruments, a highlight
THE BARBER OF SIBERIA (1998) -- straight-up classical pastiche
SOLARIS/STALKER/THE MIRROR -- his Tarkovsky stuff is must-have for everyone
A QUIET OUTPOST (2010) -- late score with some cool electronic melodies and riffs; trying to keep up with the times
THE HERO (2016) -- back to the broad and lush symphonics for this

And then I managed to get hold of - at least in digital file form - the two insanely comprehensive "Anthology" sets (of 11 and 12 CDs, respectively), covering decades of his career, primarily his Russian material. It's not chronological, and both sound quality and music quality vary, but I've whittled both sets down to two "best of" playlists, of 73 minutes (Vol. 1) and 68 minutes (Vol. 2), respectively. From the 60s to the 2010s.

Plenty more to discover, but that's just for starters (obviously, I also sampled a great many scores and things that didn't quite make the cut, but I wanted to focus on the good things here).

I'll continue talking to myself for a bit.

When whittling down the massive Anthology sets to two albums, I had to make some tough choices. I put a limit of 1-4 tracks from each CD. And I focussed more on the melodic than the abrasive experimental sonorities. As a result, these were the titles represented on disc 1:

For volume 2, taking screenshots is trickier, because it's all in cyrillic font. I'll see if I can find some other way to share it.
