If Zimmer and Goldsmith were a challenge, Thomas Newman is difficult. Being one of my least favourite score composers of recent years (unlike his illustrious father), I've scrawled through his IMDb "Composer" listing to find films I've seen.
- The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - enjoyable, emotional if totally ludicrous - The War (1994) - Kevin Costner is wonderful - The Green Mile (1999) - same as Shawshank - Erin Brockovich (2000) - not nearly as good as it should have been and made worse by the annoying film score - Road to Perdition (2002) - pretty good, could have been better - The Good German (2006) - TN's best score ... shame the film failed on so many levels - The Debt (2010) - a failure on all counts, so disappointing - The Adjustment Bureau (2011) - I recall enjoying this - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) - a great cast ... what a waste - Skyfall (2012) - the worst JB007 film ... by far ... destroyed my love of cinema, I haven't been since - Bridge of Spies (2015) - okay .. as a TV movie - Spectre (2015) - far better than Skyfall but that's not saying much, awful score once again
12 ... that's about it. Top film ... choice between Shawshank and Green Mile simply because they pulled the heart strings. Worst ... easily Skyfall for destroying my love of cinema and JB007 ... and the score was a major (but not most significant) contributor.
