So, the year 2023 just started and with it ,a year of great releases ...like every year we will see around 5, awesome, and in terms of filmhistoric preservation , "important" releases.(Not talking about rereleases ) Like the last years FRENZY...MURDER BY DEATH...SHAMUS....THE PRIVATE EYE....DAMNATION ALLEY..BLACK PATCH /THE MAN..ENDLESS NIGHT...THE BRIDE WORE BLACK ....etc etc.

One we know already ,will be Intrada`s:
THE MAN MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH / ON DANGEROUS GROUND

Well, just this coming Monday Leigh Phillips is conducting a new recording of two more complete Jerry Goldsmith TV scores for General Electric Theater: "Hitler's Secret" (1959) and "The Legend That Walks Like a Man" (1961). So those premieres should be coming out for Kickstarter backers in maybe 6-8 weeks or so, and the general public will probably have access to purchase them in a few months. (By the way for anyone who missed the first two he did -- "Sarah's Laughter" and "The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky" -- they're available here in lossless CD quality with detailed liner notes by yours truly, for only £4 each: https://www.lpfilmmusic.co.uk/shop)

I'm optimistic he can keep the momentum going and maybe do mini Kickstarter campaigns to record the remaining 4-5 extant Goldsmith scores for the series before the end of the year? (And yes folks, it sounds like a CD will almost certainly be coming at this point.)

TMNT III - John Du Prez comes Friday. I+II are back on CD as well for those that missed the first rounds.

Orville Season 3 - coming from 'outer space' - possibly another record label.

Spider-Man 2 and 3 - Elfman and Young ~ LLL

Reivers - John Williams (guessing it's LLL)

Alexei Aigui (has something coming from MBR) - multiple possibilities. (Hoping for Exterminate All The Brutes).

Intrada has a list of composers:

Alan Silvestri, John Beal -- these guys are at the plant. Then we have James Newtown Howard, Bernard Herrmann, Marco Beltrami, Danny Eflman, Jerry Goldsmith, Joel McNeely, James Horner, John Barry, Richard Band, Hans Zimmer -- all on deck."

Hoping the Silvestri is Super Mario Bros. As for the others there's a lot of cool options.

From Varese this year I'd love to see more seaQuest from Don Davis (but I think chances are slim). If Brainstorm is happening I'd hope it might come out this year.

I have been assuming for quite a while that somebody is working on a set of "Night Gallery" scores (composed by Billy Goldenberg, Gil Mellé, Paul Glass, Oliver Nelson, Robert Prince, Eddie Sauter, etc.). There is a market for it and the series itself has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity recently, so I feel it's being worked on but has taken a long time to finish. Perhaps 2023 will be the year a "Night Gallery" soundtrack finally gets released.

Take it with a large grain of salt, but somebody in the comments section of one of my suite videos said "Dynasty" was coming. I won't repeat the label name. Said they talked to the label head. Even if true, I can't really say 2023.

Some Bernstein since he was so ridiculously neglected last year!

The key word here is assuming.

James, I agree, that is a key word in my post. I have no inside information, but "Night Gallery" does seem like a natural release due to the market and the popularity of the series.

I don't have the heart to make any predictions, but it would be nice if some of the companies could give a few "hints" that some used to.

Bear McCreary’s The Rings of Power. I’m curious as to who is going to release this. The fact that Bear is posting so much about his musical ideas for this he obviously considers this a major achievement. Will it be one collection, a number of 2 CDs releases? I’m sure he wants to include a substantial booklet with his thoughts on composing the score. Maybe it will coincide with season 2.

Some Bernstein since he was so ridiculously neglected last year!

Only Quartet Records was able to tribute 2 Titles last year:

1) THE SCALPHUNTERS
2) THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

But I can understand labels trying to match anniversaries and release titles to support them but things are not always aligned with the stars.

My prediction is a negative one.

If any James Bond comes out at all in 2023, it'll be just Licence To Kill at best.

Cheers

There was mention of a “Spotlight on John Barry” new recording to follow up on the excellent John Williams release. The last I heard it had been recorded but that was in 2021, so worried that economic factors have intervened:

On the John Barry front , 2023 has already started spectacularly with La La Land's expanded, remastered 'Chaplin. We also know that Quartet have rerecorded Seance On A Wet Afternoon, Love among the Ruins, The Corn Is Green, and The Glass Menagerie for release this year.

Intrada also have a Barry release in the pipeline.

What else might br released, well, more in hope than expectation:

For too many years I've hoped for releases of Barry's rejected scores for 'Year Of The Comet' and 'Goodbye Lover'. Surely, this year will see the release of one or both? If not now, when?. We know tapes exist and rights issues may be complex but anything is possible with a little good will on all sides.

The Specialist has already got an album of close to an hour of music but the mastering is not great.I always have to turn up the volume Warner's decision not to work with third party labels on Warner material makes this one unlikely in the short term. However, never say never. In the medium/long term executives and policies can change and hope springs eternal.

Moonraker remains a source of frustration. The tapes do exist. La La Land were interested pre pandemic. In 2015 a crowdfunder raised enough money for a rerecording, only to be thwarted at the last minute by legal issues. The enthusiasm for this one among Bond and/or Barry fans is huge and it would no doubt be a big seller. It is now 20 years since Lukas Kendall worked on expanded 60s/early 70s Barry Bond scores, surely the time is right for more?

Regardless of speculation, we know we're getting three releases in 2023 so Barrywise it wil be a good year.
