We watched The Killer last night, a random choice on Netflix because we saw Barbie last week and it’s too early for Scrooged.
Without wanting to repeat what’s already been stated, I probably will. We really enjoyed it. It was perhaps a little too long but the chapters helped to break it up. What stayed with me was the inner turmoil somehow exhibited in Fassbender’s eyes and general demeanour as he loses his grip on the points in his mantra. Thoroughly professional (maintaining concentration through yoga, having hidden emergency packs, and the brief comment that he’s made a lot of money from his work) yet hiding - in my opinion - an insistent and pervasive case of imposter syndrome that he seeks to control through meditation and repetition.
The score was just about perfect, dark and abstract, not that other approaches might not have worked, but that one absolutely did. Having to listen to Morrissey to focus is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but it suited the persona Fincher and Fassbender were showing. I’d like to read the graphic novel, and imagine I’ll be watching the film again.
I wasn’t too keen on the sitcom names, although I get nuts-score’s point about the use of them. It was one of the less original aspects of the film. There were some fine set pieces from start to finish, one of the highlights for me being Tilda Swinton’s portrayal and her relationship with the hotel staff, which was priceless. When I do watch it again it’ll be in part to figure out how much of it was pitch-black comedy and whether that arose by design or organically.
One of the better films I’ve seen on Netflix of late. I tend to prefer the selection available on Prime. And frankly I don’t know why I keep Sky movies on my subscription, but I digress
