Are the four score tracks from the first album also included in the score release? Maybe as single cues instead of suites?

They are not. Though some melodies repeat from those in other tracks.

Hey Thor! Have you listened to the actual score album release yet? Maybe, like me, you had written off Balfe because I've never been impressed with his more symphonic stuff (Bargain Zimmer in the most banal sense) but this is a score I cannot get enough of. He really knows his way around a synth, and even my wife was bumping it this morning as she was getting ready for work!

Also, build yourself a playlist with the new score album release and the four Balfe tracks from the soundtrack release. You'll thank me. "Fall Into Place" is an overlooked one from that first release.

Listening to it now, thanks for the heads-up! And BOY, is this a much better experience than the regular soundtrack. Some great tracks here that are more in the lean, electronic style I was looking for (whether they are moody or funky). Of course, the album is much too long, but should be possible to build a playlist. And incorporate the "Puzzle Piece" from the regular soundtrack.

I've never written off Balfe. I've liked him since the beginning. But he's very uneven -- from anonymous RC pap to some striking, beautiful textures (AD ASTRA, GHOST IN THE SHELL, HIS DARK MATERIALS etc.). But when he's on like this -- clearly working within an idiom he's comfortable with and should explore more often -- he hits the nail on its head.

I agree. I don't mind the length of this album however because I dig pretty much every track; even the more Thriller-esque Brad Fiedel sounding pieces. I think you were cold on Ambulance last year but it was one I quite enjoyed by him. It was almost like a punk rock approach to an electronic score. And I loved Ad Astra and Jungleland by him and generally enjoy his co-work with Zimmer (still waiting for a good full release for Top Gun: Maverick).

Top Gun or Maverick?

Why would Balfe be aware of an expansion of the '86 Top Gun score? I would imagine he's only referring to the Top Gun score he worked on, that being Maverick.

Yes, it was Maverick

Finally watched the movie last night, so I got to listen to the score now (its just how I work...lol).

Listened to the four OST score tracks today and must say I simply just didnt enjoy them frown Are these the best tracks from the entire score? (I mean since they chose those four to be more "public"). Or is the actual score better?

So those four tracks on the OST are not on the score album. And as far as your tastes go, I don't quite know how to answer your question ("better" is a term I avoid when it comes to subjectivity). Looking at your profile, maybe vintage appropriate synth music isn't your forte? Do you like groups like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, or Yellow Magic Orchestra? Do you like composers like John Carpenter or Wendy Carlos (who this score references a few times)? Those are the points of reference which I would use to recommend this score to others. I do think the score album is considerably "better" than those four tracks on the OST, but I also love those four tracks too.

Thanx! You're right, "better" etc might not be the best way to label a score as its all about individual taste smile

To be honest, I haven't even heard about these groups you mention big grin So probably not! But I do like some of John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN scores! What I noticed is that the four tracks kinda reminded me about Mac Quayle's score for MR ROBOT. Which I like (or at least I usually add about 50% of the score to my playlist from the albums, not all the tracks are for me). So maybe its the same case here. But hey, no point of me to keep wondering and analyzing whether I'll like it or not. I can just listen to it and get it over with! lol! I always premiere listen to a new score while out walking cause its the only way I can actually focus and pay attention to the music. Usually my mind and thoughts are everywhere! If I listen to it at home or while I'm doing other things, I sometimes forget that I'm even listening to music, big grin

A fun thing about this score is that it can be very groovy. That is what caught my wife's attention about it. We've seen Kraftwerk live, and she loves vintage synth music, John Carpenter, and 80s New Wave so she was immediately asking what it was when I first listened to the music outside of headphones while cooking dinner last week. This was the track that caught her attention:

I wonder if a CD edition is coming in Japan. Rambling Records issued a couple of "Japan only" CDs and this movie even has some Japan related scenes and topics. I would buy the CD for sure.

Fantastic! This track is also a main motif which recurs throughout the rest of the score, as well.

A CD release would be awesome! I buy/collect vinyl these days so I would definitely jump at the opportunity of that in my habit.

Now I'm excited about the score! Will most likely give it a spin tomorrow for my afternoon walk (I sound like an old man, lol!)

Fantastic! It is good "active" music, in my opinion. I enjoy walks as well though I am usually with my wife and dogs and we usually just shoot the shit in conversation. Years ago, before we moved in together, I would love walking my dog while listening to scores and other music. So cheers to you and your health!

Also if you like this music do check out some of the synth greats like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Kraftwerk, and more!

Listening to this score also reminds me of some of Mark Snow's "X-Files" scores, but overall it's a great homage to all synth film scores of the early 80's...

Yes my walks are almost like therapy sessions. Helps me clear my mind from racing thoughts and relax.
So yes, very good for my health smile
