I know I'm very out of touch, so it's highly likely I've missed recent news about Lalo. But I don't remember seeing anything about what he's up to for a few years. He has looked frail for a long time but I'm hoping he's still comparatively well for a man of his age.

Can someone fill me in on the details?

Well said Graham; I've been wondering as to Lalo's health myself.

I wish he could release more titles from his label Aleph.

I'm surprised at you Thomas, being that this is clearly a thread about Lalo himself and his general health and wellbeing?

I think the last picture I saw of him was during the Oscar ceremony reception prior to Morricone winning for THE HATEFUL EIGHT (there's a pic of both of them sitting together during a reception). He looked somewhat frail then already, but I hope he's reasonably well.

I watched this a few days ago. One of the comments is that it "doesn't swing" (and it doesn't, in my opinion) and in a lot of sequences you can barely tell the brass is there frown

Just to reinterate: I hope Lalo is in reasonable health. I note he wasn't present at this concert, perhaps unsurprisingly.

The way I see it, he is -- along with John Williams, Quincy Jones and Philip Glass -- the last remaining TITANS of that generation. No disrespect meant to Rosenthal, Scott, Phillips, Grusin, Doldinger etc, but they're just not that level to me. May he long continue!

Schifrin, as Quincy Jones once said, is a monster.

His film/TV works have been well documented here. My favorites: The Fox, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, The Four Musketeers, The Cincinnati Kid, Dirty Harry, Mission: Impossible, Mannix, and many more.

And five favorites from his jazz/pop albums:

Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts by Paul Horn. Sublime work for small jazz group augmented by brass and voices. Horn's alto and flute solos are just perfect. (The Aleph re-recording is good, but the original is the one to get.)

Gillespiana and New Continent, both by Dizzy Gillespie. Album-length jazz suites composed and arranged by Schifrin.

Schifrin/Sade. Jazz meets music from the past. Schifrin's jazzy harpsichord solos are wonderful.

Rock Requiem. Another mass, this one carried by voices. When this first came out in the early 70s I was so disappointed. When I re-listened to it about 20 years ago I couldn't believe how much it moved me. A very touching work. I was thrilled when this was included on the Uni-France Schifrin box--its only CD release.

I did a bit of snooping around Facebook and other places I don't usually go, as an undercover reporter for The Sun, and although I admit that as an investigator I'm useless, my cursory glances shed no information on the composer or his wife Donna since 2020.

It seems you can still order from the Aleph site, but again it seems that there has been no updates there for years. Even his biography details stop at year 2018.

Someone must know (Doug Raynes?) what the situation is with Lalo Schifrin. Perhaps he's just "doing a Jack Nicholson", and lives a reclusive life in peace. Any solid info from a reliable source would be much appreciated, although there may be private family issues in the way.

Anyway, let's hope any forthcoming news is good news.

Looks like a terrific concert! I just stumbled upon it now on Youtube, and then got on this site and saw it mentioned in this thread..... I know what I'm watching tonight!

Lalo Schifrin is most definitely one of the very few TRULY GREAT film composers that has ever lived... along with other giants like John Williams, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith, Henry Mancini, Elmer Bernstein, Bernard Herrmann, and Ennio Morricone...

As many on this site are probably aware, Lalo Schifrin celebrates his 91st birthday this June... making him, along with the great John Williams (who just celebrated HIS 91st birthday last month, as I'm sure you also know), sadly now the only two remaining TRULY ICONIC film composers that we have left...

This past year, John Williams has received non-stop attention, tributes, and accolades for his 90th birthday (and deservedly so, as most people, including myself, consider him the #1 greatest film composer of all time). but Lalo Schifrin is a musical TITAN as well, and it saddens me that he hasn't gotten much attention at all this past year, like Williams has (especially since maestro Schifrin is thankfully still with us).. So I am so happy to see that this tribute concert took place this year... At least it's something.

It would be SO NICE if we could see some upcoming Lalo Schifrin CD releases in the very near future, such as Murderers' Row, Escape to Athena, The Nude Bomb, Black Moon Rising, Starsky & Hutch, St.Ives, Charley Varrick... or any other as yet unreleased gems. Many of his greatest scores have NEVER been released commercially on CD, which is baffling... and a crime to humanity!

I would like to add my love and admiration of Lalo Schifrin to this post... I hope that he is doing well.

Lalo Schifrin is a living musical legend, and most definitely "The King of Cool!"

Here again is the Youtube link to that concert in France from 2/3/2023... I'm going to watch it now myself!

Lalo is 91 today!

The "Agencia AJN" (I think that's The Autralian Jewish News? - although I looked at a Spanish-language article) reprints the biography, but adds a sentence in which it says that he's "living in LA, creating daily (?) and missing Buenos Aires, despite not being able to travel due to doctors orders". It sounds a bit made-up, the way that's shoehorned in.

Still a little bit baffled by the deafening silence from his Facebook site for example, although there have been of course birthday wishes expressed elsewhere.

Happy birthday to Lalo Schifrin! I hope that he's OK and that we get some kind of reliable update on his health.

I already said everything that I wanted to say 3 months ago (look directly above to see my earlier post),
but I will repeat this...

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

OK... I lied... I'm going to repeat one more thing...

"Hey, record companies"...
Where is the MURDERERS' ROW CD?
Where is the ESCAPE TO ATHENA CD?
Where is the NUDE BOMB CD?
Where are COUNTLESS OTHER unreleased titles from the Maestro?.
GET ON IT!

Watching St Ives on Blu-Ray from Shout

Shocked this one has never had a release not even in LP.

I wonder if the tapes are lost.

Where is the ESCAPE TO ATHENA CD?

To each their own, I suppose but I don't see what the fuss is here. I have it on lp and find it pretty unremarkable , from a pile of otherwise pretty decent stuff.
