I just listened to an interview from 1969 with Anthony Harvey and actress Jane Merrow just before the release of The Lion in Winter, and Harvey mentioned that he would be directing Nicholas and Alexandra for Sam Spiegel.

If that had happened, John Barry probably would have been hired, having worked on films by Harvey and Spiegel. On second thought, that would have been the same year JB composed Mary Queen of Scots, The Last Valley, Walkabout, and a few others.

I love RR Benett's score, but I think Barry would have done wonders with the intrigue, murder, death, corruption, and the mystical perversion of Rasputin.

I recall a Robert Redford interview on Charlie Rose, many years ago. Redford asked Spiegel to consider him for the part of Rasputin (!) in N and A. According to Redford, in that interview, that was the one part he really wanted and didn't get,

Ironically both Barry and Bennett were nominated for an Oscar for Best Score that year (for "Mary Queen Of Scots" and "Nicholas And Alexandra", respectively) but lost to Michel Legrand for "Summer Of '42".
