I just listened to an interview from 1969 with Anthony Harvey and actress Jane Merrow just before the release of The Lion in Winter, and Harvey mentioned that he would be directing Nicholas and Alexandra for Sam Spiegel. If that had happened, John Barry probably would have been hired, having worked on films by Harvey and Spiegel. On second thought, that would have been the same year JB composed Mary Queen of Scots, The Last Valley, Walkabout, and a few others. I love RR Benett's score, but I think Barry would have done wonders with the intrigue, murder, death, corruption, and the mystical perversion of Rasputin.
