I've loved this song since the movie came out. As good as the song is (it's my favorite JW score) I'm surprised to find very few cover versions.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson recorded perhaps the first one back in the 70s.

Others? I prefer instrumentals but would like vocals as well.

The most recent, I believe, is the version by Anne-Sophie Muller with John Williams (running almost 6 minutes) from their album "Williams: Selected Film Themes" which came out summer of 2022.

A great song with outstanding lyrics by Johnny Mercer!
Williams had more success with "Make Me Rainbows" from Fitzwilly.

Possibly because I don’t (didn’t) know the melody, I found this track to be the best of the three (all lovely) recordings. I may even be tempted to watch the film again which I didn’t enjoy 30 yrs ago. A great album.

Possibly the best vocal rendition is Harry Connick's performance with the BPO / John Williams conducting. Evening at pops 2001.

Audio only

I was just re-reading the novel--first time in years and spotted the sentence, spoken by Marlowe: "It happens every day."

Give Mercer credit here. He probably read the novel when he got the assignment and jotted down any sentences or thoughts inspired by the novel. That kind of dedication doesn't, well, happen every day.
