MOANA was a great film, but -- like with all the other animated Disney films that have received this treatment in recent years -- is in no need of a live action remake.

Agreed, especially since the original version wasn’t all that long ago. The only live-action remake I actually liked was Cinderella, which was respectful to the original, but not slavishly so. Everything else has been rather meh, and am rather dreading what they’ll do with Snow White. With all these live-action remakes, it makes one wonder why they even bother with animated films anymore.

The important thing is that these live-action remakes have been highly profitable which explains why the studio keeps rolling them out.

Soon they'll release they can do this in reverse, too -- make live-action Disney films into animated films. I hope Mr. Mouse doesn't see this post...

They’re kinda sorta already done something along those lines with Robin Hood. First came The Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men with Richard Todd (one of the studio’s first all live-action films) in 1952, and then came the animated film in 1973.

Interestingly enough, I think "Moana" of all films could be better in live-action. Part of it is because it wasn't cel-animated, so it's already halfway there by virtue of having been already 3D. The world and character designs were also pretty uninspired and close to real-life anyway, so it's not a huge leap. But I also found the film to be kind of weak and lacking enough of the fantastical magic that animation can provide.

I'm not a fan of Disney remakes and this movie just came out like yesterday, but live action might make it better.

I’m not sure why “need” is an appropriate word in this situation. Of course nobody needs this (or any) movie. The question is, will people go see it? Disney is hoping they will.

I did a quick search of the FSM archives and found this post from January 1941.

Hollywood has officially run out of ideas! The gent who wrote Juarez has started work on a remake of “Satan Met a Lady,” which came out just five years ago! Do we need this again?? I was hoping at least Korngold would score it, but apparently it’s that Deutsch guy who scored “The Kid from Kokomo”! I hope this thing bombs.

I happen to think its one of their best looking Disney films in recent years. If it looks to much like live-action (which I don't agree with other than maybe the water effects) then that's the best argument for not making it into a live-action film. I would've loved a 2D animated film but no one is going back to that.

I'm putting my money on THE CONFABULOUS FRABTRAPTION OF PROFESSOR HORATIO HUFNAGEL from 20th Century Fox.

I think next up is a live-action "Encanto", they might as well at this rate.

Remake The Hand That Rocks The Cradle as an animated musical! The plot works in Gilbert & Sullivan songs...
