I also find that first track super-annoying in its zany zigzags, but I have certainly learned not to judge an entire score based on the first track. It does settle down once you get into it.
Seriously? First track is less than two minutes long and manages to change the direction abruptly like 7 times? Unbearable.
This ability is one of my favorite things about John Powell.
Jerry Goldsmith had it too; nowhere more evident in his great final score Looney Tunes: Back in Action which both channels the great Carl Stalling at times while also sounding like something Powell might do at others. I wouldn’t want every score to be this way, but a zany animated comedy seems like the perfect place for it.

Yeah, it's called film scoring.
No kidding. It's as if some people around here forget that the film music is supporting VISUALS that just might call for abrupt direction and tonal changes in a very small amount of time.
Just listened to the entire score and it's pure gold. It's vibrant and has some great themes and is brilliantly orchestrated. It really is only the first cue that is so frantic, the rest is vintage Powell. Loving it!
Its got Powell's signature all over it. A little bit of Happy Feet, Ice Age, Robots, Bolt. Its pretty sweet but not sure it has a cohesive voice that ties it all together. Seems pretty random musically speaking.

Some fantastic - and typical John Powell-ian - flights of fantasy in this one. He really has developed a unique voice of his own over the years. It can get a bit broad at times, as befits the film no doubt, but when he's soaring or tugging at your heartstrings, it's an absolute delight to listen to. I plan a near future whittle to get it down to a solid 30-40 minute 'on-the-go' play list. And congrats to him on his Emmy win for the Michael J Fox documentary.
I did get to see this film and I did not have any idea who did score, until about 10 mins into and recognized Powell's unmistakable style. Cute movie and the music was a lot of fun.
I just break out into a BIG smile whenever I hear the female choir break out their BOM BOMS during those moments. This is a lovely, fun score and it gets better with each subsequent listen.

My initial whittle (I will replay the score to check if any other cues were choked unfairly) runs (flies?) about 35 mins...
1. Bedtime Story (1:46) 2. What Else Is Out There? (1:50) 3. The Flock Arrives (1:00) 4. Join Our Migration (3:30) 5. Open Your Eyes (1:27) 7. Let’s Fly (1:51) 9. Night Time, Day Time (3:07) 13. Jamaica (3:56) 28. Migration End Titles (1:59)
It seems I REALLY LIKE the first and last 5-6 cues.
