There's a glaring error in the liner notes for this CD - whilst listing the "rejected" Bernstein scores that HAVE since seen the light of day on CD recordings, the title A NIGHT IN THE LIFE OF JIMMY REARDON is included. To my knowledge Bernstein's music for this opus has never been released in any form; even the song (I'm Not Afraid to Say Goodbye) sung by Johnny Mathis was never issued on disc.

Right — Varese released the Bill Conti score but the Elmer Bernstein score was not among the five(!) rejected Bernstein scores they have released over the years.
Sign me up for any and all Bernstein rejected scores of course… here’s hoping Casey’s Shadow and especially A River Runs Through It can also be produced, some day.

Theory: Maybe Jimmy Reardon was coming but held up for reason(s) and people forgot to check the booklet here and remove it (or the booklets were already printed and it was a "fuck it, use it").

Given the two required "Two Plays & Back to the House Of Pain" and sadly report it's an instantly forgettable Elmer.
However....
No reason it should have been jettisoned. Served the lame flick as well as Powell did. If only I had the bread to throw away in life...
Worth owning for a very good essay in the notes, and heartening this was, unfortunately, Bear's first in to the scene.
A nice product but if you're looking for BERNSTEIN.....Last Man Standing & Bulletproof are both looking at this score and bellylaughing....

Bernstein was getting replaced a lot unfortunately in the early 00's. He was the original composer of Gangs of New York, replaced by Howard Shore, and thus began the Scorsese/Shore run of many years.
I went to a test screening of this movie on the Paramount lot. It played like gangbusters. There was a scene with Cuba Gooding escaping one car and climbing into one of those "Wide Load" homes being pulled by a tractor. He jumps into the house, gets into a bed, and there's a couple in it! The guy chases him out and he has to jump off the house. Great sequence, it got cut. It was on the DVD deleted scenes though.
The opening titles were temp tracked with Gremlins 2. The beginning part of "Gremlin Credits" (End titles). It was a fast and furious temporary title sequence and it set the tone for the movie. It was great. I remember seeing it in the theatre and thinking "Its not as good as that test!" It was shorter and the credits were animated, but it just didn't sing.

I watched this once in the company of Pino, and remember laughing, enjoying it enough....then moving on.
I'm not sure the death of large cast caper comedies is a real loss. Must be in the right mood to enjoy. And even then there's....Million Dollar Mystery.
Bought on the cheap at a Kino Lorber sale and.....phew. It's a stre....no, that doesn't cover it. Its ruff.
