The four year old version of me that grew up watching Beetlejuice daily is certainly excited for this but I really struggle remembering the time when I really loved a new Tim Burton movie. I was even a bit cold to Big Fish and even on re-watch just cannot make the connection. Sleepy Hollow feels like the last one I really loved, and it holds up for me. Mars Attacks was the last truly funny one, and even it is something of a cult oddity today. But if this is a good movie and Burton comes back with some inspiration then this will be worth it. I'm not at all worried about Keaton, he is a great actor always. It will be a big hit, without a doubt.

This'll be interesting. I can't think of many times a composer has returned to score a sequel with this length of gap. Will he try to recapture how he sounded back then?

If anything can restore the eye of the tiger for Burton, it's this. Sweeney Todd is the only movie this century I'd place alongside his Pee-Wee to Sleepy Hollow run.

The casting sounds good and Elfman revisiting this territory has me giddy.

I don't think there's ever been such a gap (36 years if the sequel comes out next year). Obviously, John Williams scored The Rise of Skywalker 42 years after Star Wars (and the theme for "Obi-Wan Kenobi" was three years after that), but he did seven other sequels and prequels in between. Same 42 years between Indiana Jones' first movie and his last, but again, several in between.

I suppose if you count Elfman's theme from the 1989 cartoon series, you can shave a year off. But still!

I try to come around to Sweeney Todd as well. I love the source material but I didn't care for half of the singing voices.

Oh, it's finally happening, then! The rumours have been swirling for years. Should be interesting to see whether this film can live up to the hype.

Without Michael McDowell, Larry Wilson, and Warren Skaaren I would probably set my expectations very low knowing this probably will have a very rote script probably written and re-written by at least 4 Hollywood hacks. Especially since the strike is happening as the movie goes into production.

If those guys WERE around today… they’d be on strike!

To this project: Why not, I say. Not that the original film screamed for a sequel or anything, but in the right hands (which it obvioulsy has), it could work.

As far as the score is concerned, I think the original BEETLEJUICE theme is one of the greatest compositions Elfman has ever written. The rest of the score, however, has always left me a bit cold. Some nice bits here and there, but not really anything on that main theme's level. Still, I'd be curious to hear if and how Elfman develops the material.

I think this was the 2nd time he did a full orchestral film score PEE WEES BIG ADVENTURE being the other one and he was just starting. This is definitely vintage Elfman quirkiness galore.

I'm playing the expanded version on my car today. Some nice additional cues. Plus I love the Opening Titles with Elfman doing the Day-O voice over which is absent on the OST.

God I wish the expanded score had been given its own release, instead of being a part of that ridiculously priced box. Same for Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but it's hard for me to get excited about this one.
The first film felt like such a one-off, and even that one just about kept things bubbling for its 90 minute run time (being honest, I thought that one felt stretched as it was).
And now everyone is nearly 40 years older!!
They really have got nothing new for today's generation, have they?

Expanded? Do tell...

(edit- Oh, right- that giant box set...)

The problem here is that the version on the box set is not the movie version. The "Day-O" vocal is not the one from the film and sounds like it was recorded and added for the set...

I learned yesterday with the casting of Monica Bellucci that Tim Burton is in fact dating Monica Bellucci! How on Earth does he pull down such beauties throughout his life? What are his secrets?

Money, power, influence? Is Ortega secretly their child too?
