By the way, it's amazing to read this thread and find many movies I absolutely ADORE and like to watch over and over again. Different strokes. Indeed. PAN'S LABYRINTH, for example, is one of my all time favorite movies, possibly my favorite fantasy movie. I've seen it two times so far, but I definitely want to see it again. (Got the Blu-ray.) The moment the officer smashed in the face of a hostage with the blunt side of a wine bottle is when I turned it off. WTF? Way to violent and graphic for my tastes. I guess it wasn't the film I thought it was going to be. It's s very violent film, yes, and it's also quite dark and looking into the human abyss, but it's taking place in the Spanish Civil War, which was a deeply brutal time. But the movie is never gratuitously violent, the violence is necessary in the context of the film. It's definitely not a kid's movie though.

I consider that scene gratuitously violent, but thanks for explaining the overall tone of the film for me. I know now not to revisit it. I find films and television programs way to violent nowadays. You can get dark but when it becomes grotesque its no longer entertaining to me.

I consider that scene gratuitously violent, but thanks for explaining the overall tone of the film for me. I know now not to revisit it. I find films and television programs way to violent nowadays. You can get dark but when it becomes grotesque its no longer entertaining to me. I understand. I am don't "enjoy" violence in a movie per se, but if it is done "right" and used for a purpose, I am fine with it. (Same with anything else, like sex.) I also liked FIGHT CLUB, even though that movie was also quite brutal, but again, the violence served a purpose. PAN'S LABYRINTH may be a shocking film if you start watching it expecting it to be a "standard" fantasy adventure movie. But just like I find the violence in SCHINDLER'S LIST necessary, not gratuitous, so I find the violence in PAN'S LABYRINTH essential to the theme of the movie. The movie basically tells two stories at once, or perhaps better, one story that can be seen in two different ways. I found it one of the most moving movies I have ever seen, but yes, it is also brutal as I said, not an easy watch. It is an intense movie.
