Apologies if this has been covered in an earlier post

Currently on YouTube is the 1956 Oscar-winning short documentary feature, "The True Story of the Civil War", narrated by Raymond Massey and which, as some of you will know, was scored by Ernest Gold who also arranged and directed the music. Some of you will also know that, in 1956, Coral Records issued a vinyl album of the full soundtrack, music and dialogue.

Having just watched the film for the first time, I was certainly surprised to see that, in the opening title credits, featured slightly more prominently above Ernest Gold's credit, is a credit for Music Supervision ELMER BERNSTEIN. A similar credit appears on the Coral album sleeve but not the label'

This credit does not appear on either the IMDB or the Elmer Bernstein site. Disappointingly, the composer's own site still lists in the discography the United Artists release of " The Making of the President", despite the fact that every note of Bernstein's score was stripped out!

At least, the Coral album appears to have retained in full Ernest Gold's score.

The link with Bernstein's work is almost certainly the director of " The True Story of the Civil War", Louis Clyde Stoumens who directed the documentary, "The Naked Eye" (1956) which was scored by Bernstein.

Leslie, your post sent me on a search as I was sure I had supplied the Youtube link to "The True Story of the Civil War" sometime in the past. But I must have been mistaken, as I could not find it... -

It is a very good documentary, for it's time, telling the audience most of what it needs to know about the American Civil War in just 30-odd minutes. The narration by the stern-voiced Raymond Massey is a definite plus.

I have a DVDR of "The Naked Eye". The music was orchestrated by Ernest Gold.

Thank you for your helpful reply. Stoumen is obviously the common factor linking both Elmer Bernstein and Ernest Gold in the two films

"The Naked Eye" was certainly an auspicious start for what became a remarkable and impressive succession of documentary scores for Bernstein, particularly for David Wolper and for Ray and Charles Eames.
