Quartet Records presents the new score by renowned composer Fernando Velázquez (THE IMPOSSIBLE, A MONSTER CALLS, CRIMSON PEAK, HERCULES) for a Mexican film written and directed by Raúl Ramón.

In an unusual stylistic mash-up of westerns and Ealing comedies, EL PODEROSO VICTORIA tells the story of the town of La Esperanza in the year 1936. The town’s mining industry—its principal economic activity—must close down, and along with the closing of the mine comes news that the local railroad route will be canceled. The town’s young student machinist and mechanic will have to choose between crossing to the United States and giving up the love of his life or staying to help a group of villagers who plan to build their own train to keep the route active.

Fernando Velázquez provides an impressive, full-epic symphonic score, 73 minutes of pure film music composed as in the good old days—romantic, tuneful, with a radiant love theme. It’s exciting, emotional music, meticulously performed by the Basque National Orchestra under the baton of the composer.

Agreed.
This one looks like a no-brainer.
Who can resist THIS composer in THAT set-up.

I didn't realize this was a western too! What an awesome Quartet batch of FOUR foreign western scores!

I have about 4 tracks to go( it was time for boboes). So far it's rather lovely. Surprisingly hardly any western style music. There was a trumpet theme but that was more like Jeremiah Clark having mad minute rather than M. Lacerenza. There was a track of trippy slightly mad ethnic sounding flutes( 'indians'), a.litle bit of banjo twang and a bit of harmonicaa. However it was mostly what FV does best - large orchestra, lots of lush strings.
*that's just fron almost one play, incase I missed something.

I'll certainly be giving it a chance, but Velazquez hasn't wowed me since his masterpiece LO IMPOSSIBLE in 2012. That's 11 years ago, believe it or not. Sure, there are nice bits and pieces in things like A MONSTER CALLS or CRIMSON PEAK, but nothing that has really impressed me as a whole. Like so many other promising Spaniards, he got caught up in trying to approximate various contemporary RC tropes, and not with great success. But from the descriptions, this seems more like old-school Velazquez. Intrigued.

It couldn't be farther from the RC school of composing. It may not blow you away, Thor, fair enough, but it's certainly 'proper ' music in my opinion. Did I say it was lovely, yet, again , er.....

i don't see any RC connection, Velazquez fundamentally is an old school, "real" , composer, so he's just the opposite.
But I believe that, after the initial fabulous years, he has descended a bit into routine: according to the different genres they belong to , his scores now tend to sound very similar.
There are his "period piece " mode, his "thriller" mode, and his "comic" mode.
They're always impeccably crafted, they always sound good..but quite samey.

Velázquez usually writes a fantastic theme for every movie he is attached to but apart from that one theme I can't find anything memorable in his scores. In this regard he is like Sakamoto whose scores I have the same issue with.
