Many of us will remember Robert’s contributions to the message board through a few changes of user name, primarily using Anonie Mouse. He was a man of strong views and no little humour, which rubbed some posters up the wrong way, but he became a good and generous friend and was recommending British classical composers to me right up to the last. His close friend Christine affirmed that I could make this sad announcement and offered the following words in his memory: Robert John Guttke, age 70, passed away on May 24th, 2023 from complications of colon cancer. Robert received a BFA from Rockford College, Illinois, a place that held great memories for him. Such an incredibly gifted Renaissance man, Robert was unsurpassed with the ability to portray the human form in his sculpture, his writings & vocabulary so brilliant (how he liked to dazzle with words)! One of Robert’s proudest accomplishments was the screenplay and production of the Beauty and the Beast episode “When the Blue Bird Sings”. His photographs (appearing internationally and printed in many forms) capture the essence of man by using dramatic light to reveal muscle and sinew in the intersection of deep shadows and dynamic illumination. Close friends will celebrate Robert’s life later in the month however there will be no formal service. If you would like to make a donation in Robert’s name, he loved cats and supporting the arts. Rest in peace, Robert - although if there’s an afterlife, I have no doubt you’ll be tearing it up like a good ‘un.

Oh.... whoa, good Lord. May he rest in peace. I knew him originally from rec.music.movies and I know some people may have considered him a bully when most likely he was just bullying- excuse me,- pulling everybody's leg. I had some very friendly private exchanges with him (years ago) and traded some CDs on occasion. I always got along just fine with him and fondly remember many fiery exchanges. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Thank you for sharing this here.

I only knew of his reputation as a photographer, not as a member here. Beautiful work he did. It's always sad to lose someone here, sadder that he had just reached 70, when the quieter part of life commences for most.

I never met or corresponded with Robert. But I do recall him from the internet mists of time (mid-1990s) as one of the rec.music.movies contributors who used to "stir the pot" with his opinions. Some people with no sense of humor took offense and had raging verbal battles (whose intensity I didn't quite get) with him. I just took his opinions as a kind of a fun thing from an offbeat (tongue deeply in cheek) contributor. Rest in peace, Robert, as you move onward. Vita mutatur, non tollitur. Even the most heated discussion in any film music forum today feels rather tame by comparison to some of the discussions that happened on rec.music.movies; that was always the explosive hotspot for opinion exchange.

I butted heads with Robert a few times on rec.music.movies, but there was no animosity between us at all. Those were the days of "spirited discussions". I had some sporadic private contact with him and we were connected on Facebook (before he departed from there). I always got along just fine with him and our private exchanges were always friendly; while I was not in touch with him the last few years, I occasionally wondered what had "happened" to him (whenever I stumbled upon "The Mummy Returns"), as he seemed to have all but disappeared from forums, Social Media, and pretty much the rest of the Net.

I'll add him to the "Memoriam" thread when I get back home, and have more overview of things. It's a rather painful thread to update. It's the FSM Cemetery; a solemn but strangely comforting thread. A testament to our community.
