WOLFEN is one of my favorite scores, but it was also my earliest encounter with the then new composer James Horner back in the day, and I love the movie. I have the Intrada DEADLY BLESSING (ordered from Music Box Records with some other stuff, including INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS), but have not yet listened to it.

Speaking of Wolfen - I've got Deadly Blessing on order, but will the Horner-of-the-same-year Wolfen ever be re-released? OOP copies on Amazon are selling for around $200 - I'd be happier with a fresh in-print edition from Intrada at more the $20-25 range. Unfair for those of us out of the loop when that limited CD first came out, lol.

Was surprised. I thought it was just for sale.
Compared to the CD, only one track seems to be missing - "25 Deadly Blessing – Trailer (John Beal) (2:17)"
This is why the labels can't do digital downloads. The studios retain those rights for and release the album themselves.

This came in the other day, along with HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP. Two early low budget films from Horner. I think I'm enjoying this one more than HUMANOIDS for the time being.
The first few spins I wasn't paying due attention, but tonight I was just in the mood, and all ears. I totally understand Sean Nethery's misgivings about this (I partially agree, and could say much the same thing about HUMANOIDS), but taken as it is there's a whole lot to enjoy. It really is quite intricate throughout. I was imagining it without the gaps in between tracks and it played out like A Black Mass (tee hee), with pastoral bits.
Having said that, it's impossible to ignore the borrowings. Horner fascinates me. He seemed to go through his life almost deliberately NOT naming his influences (especially if they were film composers), so I often wonder who he thought he was fooling. What would he have said had he overheard one of the choir (for example) comment in the tearoom (for instance) that they were to a large extent redoing THE OMEN?
I suppose that's been done to death. Plenty here to enjoy. Praise the lord for making me old. He's made me soft in the head too, and I can now just relax and enjoy stuff for what it is. Praise be to Intrada too!
By the way, I think my favourite "influence" here is in the track "Snake In the Bath". I can't "unsee" Vera Miles walking up all those steps to the Bates house.
I really want to see DEADLY BLESSING now. I watched HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP twice, in the name of science, around the time that CD arrived, and while acknowledging in the back of my mind that it was truly terrible, my frontal lobotomy gave me a generally decreased depth of intensity of my emotional response to it.

Everyone ignores the borrowings, except a tiny circle of Goldsmith nuts on the internet, who simultaneously ignore all other borrowings throughout music history.

Maybe he referred to it as 'The Omen bit' himself.
Maybe he didn't bother, given it was just a job, to get done, and get through.
Maybe the choir, likewise, were more concerned with what they were having for lunch.

Which would make you lot... the Inspector Clouseaus?

The criticism / complaints / "Horner bashing" / harping / dead horse-beating / etc was twenty times worse when Horner was still alive (funny how that goes), and when you go back as far as the early 2000s around here? I don't think I could put a number on it given how bad it got, at least there's been a slow positive evolution compared to before.
